Come to think of it, we were taught critical thinking in school but I probably didn’t recognise it as such at the time. In history lessons we’d often be asked to write a piece discussing the pros and cons of a certain assertion. In English we’d have to debate topics. I suppose it was all intended to make us more robust and help us sift the wheat from the chaff. My family were always argumentative anyway.

Most things we "really believe in" are believed in to conceal our own doubts around that belief.

Never be afraid to pop the lid off one - you seldom regret it.

What kind of a being is a human being?

Sadly my eldest daughter is anorexic, seemed to happened all of a sudden however some signs were there we just didn't spot them. As a parent I wouldn't wish it on anyone it's like watching a car crash in slow motion. She is blinkered by her own opinions and what she sees as the ideal figure some of which social media is to blame for. Nothing we say or anything the professionals say is getting through and she is extremely close to being signed off work and losing her apprenticeship after that who knows

I have an extremely close relative who with their husband both hold degrees from the most prestigious universities in the world. However they have fallen down the wormhole spouting the most outrageous anti scientific rubbish you could hear all from the internet . Not much critical thinking for those two. Musk and Gates control the world from the chips we have had placed in our arms with the Covid jabs, and so much more, not sure whether to laugh or cry :ROFLMAO:

Gosh I really feel for you. You must be so worried. I think people can develop an eating disorder, as a way of controlling life. I think there are professionals and professionals by the way. I would look for a good Transactional Analysis therapist, I am guessing there must be some who specialise in eating disorder.

Horrible, I have a cousin whose ex-wife was so in the early 80s, well before the internet and social media. She is / was very bright and independent, which may well have exacerbated the problem once established, since she just dug here heels in.

Not wishing to be too bleak, but I've heard from her that she just wasn't interested in anything anyone said to her and simply ignored it all, until her father told her he wouldn't be able to bring himself to attend her funeral. For whatever reason, that was the thing that clicked; none of the other conversations with family and friends, nothing from professionals, just her dad saying that with tears in his eyes.

As far as I know she never had any problems with it in later life. I can't remember when I last saw her, maybe a decade or more, but I see here daughters now and then and have never heard of any problems with / for them.

Best of British. (y)

Thanks for your kind words, I definitely think it's a control thing as she will stick to a strict regime of what she will and won't eat. The thing is she has such a warped idea of the nutritional value of the food she is eating.
She is exactly the same bright and independent but extremely stubborn she always has been so whatever anyone says she goes the other way. For example we had a meeting before Christmas with NHS eating disorder clinic and for some stupid reason they let her see what she weighed and she had put a fraction on consequently when she went today she has now dropped a load again. I don't think it's bleak it's the sad truth nothing seems to get through the only thing that brings a flicker of anything is when they talk about her having to give up her apprenticeship. Its all just words at the moment though, until there is a consequence I can't see us getting through to her

Wish I could offer more to you, but I think you have it nailed. And, without any patronising intended, that's really to your credit, because an awful lot of people don't grasp the realities of the situation, or even try to - and that's understandable in some ways.

If you need to blow off steam any time and not to - or at - your own people, there are plenty of us on here who have a had a fair share of things go wrong ourselves, and won't object. (y)

I have known a couple of women who were anorexic in their teens, but recovered and went on to live healthy lives, so there is hope.
A friends girfriend was anorexic in her late teens to early 20s, managed to work through it with help. It was pitiful to see her. She is now circa 50, married with grown uo children and oicture of health. there is hope
