Hello, I am currently working as employed on a farm. Am only 18 on £8/h and don't get any holiday or sick pay. Wondering wether it would be worth switching to self employed for lower tax and the ability to charge more per hour since the farmer will have less costs. Also allows me to work elsewhere easier etc. Thanks

Consider aswell that if you went SE ,you dont get sick pay ,holiday pay and if it was bad weather and the farm is only arable ,you could find yourself sat at home waiting for things to improve ,,also you would need to take out liability insurance

We employ 18yr olds on that rate but they also get sick pay and at least 21 days paid hols depending on service. They have tax deducted at source which is claimed back at end of year from hmrc
Think your employer is not being fair

I don't have a huge issue with £8/h because obviously I'm inexperienced however obviously more is better. As to why I don't get holiday or sick pay, probably them not being fair. I am on the books and work full-time on a dairy and contracting farm however no-one has a contract which I have strongly hinted at that I would want one but nothing been done about it. Tax and NI is taken out, as well as £400/m for a 6x8m room which he is 'not profiting' from....

My maths might be wrong but 8x39hr x 4 weeks =£1248 ,less tax an ni ,whats that 24% total ,,948 - £400 accommodation ,,you have £550 +or- left over ,,£112 ish a week to live on ,obviously theres overtime ,presume you get time and half

Wish I did 39hrs a week at times. Did 261 hours pretty much last month just gone so more like 65hrs/week bringing in just under 2.1k without tax and rent. It's not a bad figure but that's only due to the hours I'm doing.

I am sure that if you are employed, on the books and paying NI and PAYE, you are entitled to sick pay and paid holidays.
As for the £400/month rent being deducted, that sound a bloody rip off!
Does he feed you on that as well?
I am entitled to it but he won't pay it. And I wish

Your boss is using you ,I bet the reason nobody has a contract is because ages ago ,everybody came under the eu working time directive ,meaning you could either work a basic week or agree to do overtime .
Ide be having a word with him and if hes not paying overtime rate ,look for another job asap
To be honest, I've been keeping an eye out but harvest is over now and not many tractor orientated jobs around. I don't need to sit on a tractor all day every day and enjoy working with stock but also like my machinery work too. Just difficult finding jobs available, also people who are willing to take on an 18yr old (not many)

Somebody would willing to take on an 18 yr old if they know you are prepared to work and learn .
Nobody ever in an line of work will be experienced ,you can have a head full of books from uni and still no nothing so dont knock yourself down because of your age .
Building site back of me advertised for a school leaver six months ago and an 18 yr old lad walked into site one day and asked what was involved ,,they took him there and then because he showed an interest ,,he is now doing varied jobs all over the site yet he had no experience .
You have learnt alot in your short time ,a potential employer would look on you as very willing .

I'm aware that some people do take on 18yr olds but as I've already learnt to find this job, it's very difficult. If I could find the post I made looking for a job I would show you but made it very clear I am willing to learn. Just a lot of people want someone who can start who can get on with things without needing any help or asking questions.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
