You need a flask of warm water at 35ish degrees to first thaw out the straw for 30-40 seconds. After putting straw in the gun you put it down the back of your neck then to keep it at that temperature. The thawing flask is handy as you just switch it on and it keeps a level temperature rather than using a thermometer in a jug to see if it is warm enough and having to add hot or cold water to bring it to temperature.

I use a small thermos flask and a cheap rectal thermometer check the water temperature, cheap and simple.

Dairy Mac does a very good digital thaw unit, can be plugged into the mains or run of 12v car cigarette lighter, useful if you are working at an outfarm.

A baby bottle warmer does the same job for a fraction of the price but I’ve found they tend to hold the temperature a degree or two higher so you need a thermometer and some cold water for obvious reasons (still quicker than running off to find taps though).
