Sh1t summer

Well just to buck the trend...... We've had the best summer for years!

We're overwhelmingly a dry farm (had 4 burnt to a crisp summers in a row since last "wet" summer), even this summer was looking very dodgy with it being so dry through March April &may, no Fert went on til June.
Since then we've had just enough rain to keep the grass moving, in fact I've not seen this much grass in august for years...... &it's green rather than burnt brown!

Other farm 15 miles inland.......is another story though

We've pretty much abandoned the topping. We've done all the flat bits and it's too wet and dangerous to do the steep banks and tbh it's getting too late to be of any benefit now apart from looking tidier.

After all the talk of a dry summer it's turned out very wet. Lambs aren't 'doing' even though there's plenty of grass. Farm up the raod haven't had their first cut yet and our second cut and wholecrop are well overdue but there's little hope of getting anything off our banks unless the ground has dried out. Starting to worry about winter forage now. I know it'll probably settle at some point but when exactly?

Speaking with local contractor 2 weeks ago, he has 600 acres yet to bale, a lot of that first cut, and were not in the flattest part of Wales either...

They give a dry week here so I am going to take a chance at the last six acres of hay :nailbiting::nailbiting:

snap i knocked down last 4 ac this afternoon for hay , forecasts looking brighter than last few days , got to take a chance sometime , or its going to get dewy soon for half the day , either that or will end up belly fill in rounds

yes i know , the swath either looked like it hadnt been mowed or rolled over like a carpet , son said it made the 135 grunt a bit turning the first time trying to break swath up , will be ok if weather holds , more worried about the wet ground underneath slowing it all down , Dont really want to go to plan b (rounds) as worried about mud and listeria with sheep .
