Need to purchase a bigger grab as have bought a loader anyway shear grab like a couple other machines around the farm the chrome seems to come off easy or should I say rust seems to build up under neat them and blisters so I was thinking of getting stainless rods this time around for the hydraulic cylinders anybody ever tried this thanks in advance

Had parmiter and now a Reynolds shear grab over many years and never had bubbled chrome. What grab is it that you're having the issues with?

It's simply the quality of the chrome bars they use to make the rams. Cheapest possible, why can you have a 40 year old excavator, that's lived mostly outside with the chrome cylinder rods perfect.

Have Nc meckanna and your right about the excavators had a look at another brand last week and there was rust already on the chrome

I know that it's difficult with the conventional design of grabs, but wherever possible, on any machine rams should be left closed, particularly if left outside. If the pivot point of the grab was further back, the ram could push the top up.

We have a redrock aligator, the rams on it were so shocking.

The original design didnt have gussets to protect the ram ends from silage. After resealing both rams the rods were done, local ram company fitted new rods and seals in 24hrs and we fitted home made gussets at the same time. Never looked back since.

There is no reason why you couldn't get stainless rods in the cylinders all the cranes etc offshore and on boats have stainless, but then a decent steel rod and chrome should last forever if it's not scratched or damaged, my tip cylinder on my old thwaites dumper has been left extended for the last ten years and there is no rust on that.

The Strimech grab that I had for my Loadall stood outside, with the rams open, for 32 years until I sold it 2 years ago. The chrome on the rams was perfect. As the use of the grab was seasonal, I sprayed the chrome with Duckoil when I knew it would be out of use for a while.
