Sheep being shot

In the last two nights there has been four attacks around the village. Ewes and even fornight old lambs have been shot and left in the fields. A couple at each farm, but the same each time with some being shot in the head and some being the body.

Spoke to the police about it today and there is no exit hole and no sign of any bullets or pellets left inside the animals, the hole left would be of an inch diameter too.

not sure if anyone has heard of similar before? This was near Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

There are some complete bloody moronic barstewards about.🤬🤬🤬

Could they have been shot with a crossbow and the bolt retrieved by the evil bu99ers before they ran away?

We did think this, but the hole just seemed so perfectly round. Only other potential could be crows have managed to open the wound up in a short time, but doesn’t explain why it’s round still.

According to Google crossbow bolts are 6-7mm.
Looks a bit unlikely then :scratchhead:

If there's no exit hole and nothing lodged in the bodies, then surely, whatever killed them has had to have been removed :scratchhead:

He was taking some of the sheep to have a post Mortem done when we spoke to him
Please let us know what the outcome is.

We had sheep shot with an air rifle years ago---they were good shots, got 4 ewes in the eye & a couple of week old lambs (killed them) over a few days
Was a couple of teenagers driving by in a car and just doing it ''for laughs''
They got caught red handed ---and taught a lesson i'll bet they never forgot

There's no explaining some people

I can't think of anything us mere mortals could get hold of that could leave a 25mm hole without other evidence. Rifle bullets explode and make a mess and mostly exit. A shotgun shell full of salt might make a hole and leave no trace maybe? But you'd have to be close. Maybe more of a spear type thing? Sharpened broom handle 9r something similar. Catapult would probably leave more of a large welt than a big hole on a mature sheep I'd say.

An inch hole sounds like a shotgun slug. A jacketed centre fire would go straight through without deforming . I expect an expanding round would as well if going through a lamb. Look for long (4ft) streaks in the grass where the round made contact with the ground.

Finding a bullet isn't as easy as you'd expect. They break up inside some can break up into quite small pieces they aren't exactly big to start with.
some 'bullets' are now plastic, so shatter on impact, so no lead visible.

used to have a .45 black powder gun, a .45 diameter lead solid ball, would disintegrate a lamb, it did with rabbits !

but there are some real barstewards out there. Just a pity we cannot deal with them the same way.
