Sheep footbath solutions

Haven’t footbathed my sheep before but picked one up cheap on fb marketplace. Have problems with scald more so over the winter so deciding what solution to use in it. Can run majority of them inside onto concrete to treat though my ewe lambs winter at another farm with limited handling. Is there a run through solution that’s not formalin based? Or am I looking at something they have to stand in for 15 mins if I don’t want to use formalin?

I’m sure someone said on here recently Hoofsure endurance was run through. I prefer formalin and at under £20 can it really is cheap and cheerful, if you get it in your eye it’s cheap and tearful though! Run them through the footbath empty first. Makes a huge difference!

My lambs go through by themselves now to, have done for over a month, even at shearing the ewes get drafted off and the lambs go down the footbath, running them through every time their in means that foot issues don’t appear, increasing growth rates etc etc etc…..

I think I can order Hoofsure through our vets. Noted on running them through empty first, thanks. The lambs don’t tend to get scald but it’s worse in the ewes when it’s wet in winter:banghead:

Any animals that havnt been through a footbath with me run through empty first, especially through a new handling system even before handling, run them through fast first and they’ll run the next time as they know where the exit is etc so even if 1 stalls the ones behind push them through

Yes, Hoofsure is a ‘run through’ product. I used it once, and might as well have run them through smelly water tbh.

Formalin is cheaper and more effective (against scald at least). You won’t want Hoofsure in your eye either.;) As above, have them used to running through a bath and none of the products are a particular issue to the user.

How do you dispose of formalin? I would have to empty the footbath after every use, rather than leave it in situ ready to use again. Would be used inside a shed

They reckon it deactivates after 48 hours, this isn’t true, I’ve had a footbath out in a field once and 6 weeks later had a tough lambing in that field and no water for miles so dunked my arm in it, the burn was unreal 🤦🏻‍♂️ But they do say after 48 hours you can tip away and it’s “safe” can you let it run onto the yard ?
I’ve never footbathed in a shed but I’ve heard formalin in a low shed isn’t good as it lingers and burns the lungs - which is obviously not good as it’s carcinogenic

This was my worry with it. To be fair it’s a big high shed we load grain lorries in there over summer but it’s pretty closed in and ventilation not great. Maybe I should just stand them in golden hoof? :sorry:

Try it once and see, leave as many doors open as you can to get ventilation through
