Hey up folks.
I've a recurring problem with my lower back. Doesn't seem to be getting better with whichever treatment I get. I'm wondering about one of those hang in a gate head yolks for holding Hoggs still while I dag them out. Any use?

That’s what I used to use for dagging, holding them up with my knee and crunching with a machine. Head yoke was from George Mudge, from when they first started making them (still used as a stop gate now).
It was certainly better than peeing about trying to catch & hold individual sheep, but not good on your knees or back. CombiClamp is sooooo much better, and faster, for crutching in particular. For most other jobs, it’s not much faster than a drenching race in a well set up handling yard ime.

It might not be faster for drenching and injecting, but it's easier on the body.

try a warrie back aid.

or i made a couple of head yolks with drafting gates like the iae one.

current one we use is an Alligator ally one but i bought that on special offer its not quite as strong as the steel ones but easier to take around mobile. they all work well for stand up around the tail . you cant quite crutch back around the udder s well of course, with them standing up, depend how dirty or woolly they are down there i guess. and you do have to watch hamstrings if they are a bit jumpy or restless

main thing is to have them fixed in well to the race etc as the animal can be a bit jumpy and if its firmly held it will be a lot lot better iyswim

Look for a long term improvement --
Breed the wool off your sheep---get rid of some potential causes of back pain
No dagging
No shearing
Less bending to right cast ewes etc

More money ---less back ache ;)

1) it's not for home red stuff, it's for the bought in lambs
2) after a winter like this, on heavy ground like ours ANY SHEEP would need clipping to dress them for market

Not sold on the wool shredders. Sorry

Is it a specific recurring problem or just a general ache? By all means do what you can to make the job easier, it’s the key to doing anything on a repeated basis well, but I’ve had a fair share of lower back problems and two things that have made a real difference to me is stretching the ‘posterior chain’ of your legs- calves, hamstrings and glutes, and strengthening your core with mainly ‘planks’, loads of stuff on YouTube for that kind of thing, it’s worth doing anyway, but can really help if you have lower back issues.

I wish it was just muscle issues. I do all the stretches and routine physio every few months to free everything up. I had an accident in the workshop last spring and it's set off cysts in my lower back. Had an op last year but it's an ongoing issue. Another reason I prefer sheep to workshop jobs! ??

Well in that case make the job as easy as possible!! Sounds pretty unpleasant, hope you can keep on top of it.
