Sheep possibly exposed to scab.

Neighbour unfortunately has got scab, a good chance some of mine have come into contact.

Looking at giving them cydectin 2%, just wondering how high a risk there is if causing worm resistance with a one off treatment?

Have used foot vax in the past so 1% is out

Would struggle to find clean ground for 3 weeks so not sure dectomax is an alternative and prefer not to have to dip just now.

Any input on the cydectin?

I don’t think the merchants should even be selling the injectables for scab, it’s dishonest, I lot of people believe the person behind the counter that the product will work, and it clearly doesn’t

Injectables are waste of time… did mine all last year were itching like f**k just the same as if they’d never been injected… followed vets instructions of moving them too clean pasture 12hours after injecting them re-injecting 14 days later and did sweet FA dipped them all and never seen anything itch again after the next day

Before you rush out and spend a fortune on a product that doesn't work or go dipping unnecessarily just check that yours do have Scab first.

If you get the Vet to blood test a random sample of sheep that you believe may have come into contact and it was at least 10 days ago then the test is very accurate. It was actually made in Scotland by Moredun!

Vet has actually suggested waiting to see if they start developing something. Do you know how long they need to be exposed for before the test works?

Cydectin administered correctly will work here, dectomax needs a double jag and even then I would be doubtful, dipping is the best solution but also has to be done correctly, and a dip will cover lice as well
Whether cydectin works or not isn’t farm specific it’s mite specific. It depends if the mite that you have at that particular time has mutated to be the new Moxidectin resistant strain. My dad can’t get his head around this and thinks that injecting is the only cure (we havnt had scab off neighbours for a few years mind) he does suffer hellish bad when around OP’s though

You might buy 2 groups of animals from the mart (different holdings) and the injections might work on one, both or neither depending on the actual mite that is present on them.

I’ve always been told dectomax at 1.5-2x the dose that the label says on both occasions.

Our vet was saying a few years ago there was a flock dispersal in Hereford market from Oxfordshire. All sheep looked fine and healthy and loads of people bought a pen or two. A few weeks later they started itching and after lab testing dectomax was the only thing that would stop it. I think they did them twice,a few days apart and big doses to hit it hard.

I'd say Ivermectin/Doramectin you are wasting your time. Cydectin you are hoping from experience around here. I can't advise anything other than dip

One local dipping contractor here advises to give dipping a miss every few years in case there's resistance to the dip, seeing as it's the only one available. Don't know if that's his opinion or if there's some evidence behind it

Contractor with lowering cage type would be less stressful on ewes at this time of year. Heavy in lamb and full wool it's a lot of effort getting up the ramp out of a tub.

I’ve wondered what it might cost to make a cage dipper in the yard somewhere using an old forklift mast to dunk a cage in and out of a concrete tank. A draining pen on one side and mobile race on the other.🤔

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
