Sidewall repair

I've got a 2.5-3 inch clean cut in the sidewall on a tractor tyre. I've done a temporary fix with string and it's holding up fine but would a patch done properly be sufficient or does it need moulding together?
I've asked a company to do come look and to take away if need be but been 5 days now as there busy.
If it's just a patch job any ag tyre man in a van could sort it.
Really need tractor and don't want to venture far if string pops out...
Thanks

That's a major repair.
Get it sent away and done properly, for your peace of mind or you'll never want to venture far from home.
There's a guy over here does them, was nice and quick but haven't used since covid.

I've also only had this sh tractor 3 weeks and I know I've not caught it. It's on been on stock trailer and I'd be interested if it's been fixed and it's failed. Tyres are good overall and I didn't notice any concerning cuts...

If it'd been major repair you'd see it.
If it's a patch inside, then obviously only on removal.

I had one on a nearly bald tyre in March which didn't justify a £100 repair. Bought a radial patch on eBay and did it myself. Still going! Tyre man would know when he sees it but the call-out costs more than the repair. Major repair costs them about £50 and a big patch would be possibly £20 anyway

A patch on that size will fail without doubt, I’ve patched much smaller and the fail eventually especially with road work as it’s in the sidewall and constantly flexing. You need to have a proper repair done

It probably had a patch/gaiter on the inside and it’s opened up.Simple major repair I would think, cheapest way is take the wheel into your tyre dealer it will be collected from there and returned a week later. The cost is more dependant on the value of the tyre than the repair !

I asked them to come out, with kids off we are keeping away from everyone due to our childcare help bubble being vulnerable.
Be more money I know... Just want them to sort it asap. Have to chase up Monday.

I remember you saying a while ago that you were looking for tractor
We used to have a matbro teleram 3
that had a flat wheel one day ,when the tube was removed I discovered the tyre had been repaired sometime
with a gaiter which had failed so the only option was to fit new tyre
Personally I would never trust a repaired tyre . If you take tyre to tyre depot to send to repairer they will take a pull as well, I am thinking it's rear tyre which will be very expensive to renew

I had a nice straight small cut on my front sprayer wide wheel, repaired it twice with gators and the blue tyre cement, cleared it smooth with grinder etc, I had no confidence it would last on the wall and it didn't, but needs must and spray list to complete, got it valucanised as soon as could after that and it's fine now, riding around on patch repairs always sticks in your mind too, get it done properly and forget about it. It will probably never be life and death situation with a tractor, it's just the bloody inconvenience!!! Always been furthest away from farm.

I had a major repair done a few years ago and it has held up well. The problem was the costs of the guy coming out and bringing it back again. Make sure you know how much they are charging because by the end of it I was well on my way to buying a new tyre.

Sometimes you have to balance the cost of replacing a pair of tyres, say you bust a rear tyre with 40% tread left, unless you are lucky enough to find a used one with similar amount of tread.

It's a front tyre must be 80%. Tractor has a loader so will get a fair loading. New I'm looking at around 600. Tyre place wouldn't give me a price without looking at it but I've used them before and customers have always used them and found them very fair.

When I was young and foolish, and with a father who wouldn't spend money on any thing if he could avoid it, we had a wall split of about 3" which was parallel to the rim, and probably half way between the rim and the tread on the back wheel of our Fordson Major (a cross ply tyre).

As a bodge was called for, I cut off a piece of 6"flat belt and fixed it to the inside of the tyre with 2 quarter inch cup headed bolts. The bolts were on the rim side only so as to allow for the flexing of the tyre. It lasted for ages until a new pair of tyres were needed.
