Well in sub artic temps with snow falling the straw at the final sale for winter 17/18 at sedge today sold to a packed ringside................................

Prices.

Small bale Wheat collected
: £2.30 sold
: £2.20 unsold

6 string Wheat delivered

£108 not sold Artic + drag ( 2nd lot not even offered for sale )
£122 sold ( small load behind a tractor )

4 string Wheat delivered

£26/ bale ( small load behind tractor )

That pic was either taken at harvest or the silage has not fermented correctly!

Reminds me of silage baled in late Oct/ Nov than properly fermented pit silage.

Remember years ago baling and wrapping October leafy grass that came out in the winter almost as it went into the bale.

We were feeding it to housed dairy cows and the nutritionist/advisor called on his regular appointment. He was amazed at the quality of the silage and told me that I should be making more of this leafy May grass. Would not believe me that it was October stuff, but in the end he just said, well just make more of it whatever it is.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
