Drove up the A303 this morning, not my normal route but must have seen at least 30 loads of straw ,some driving in convoys of five , our resident straw man was one of them Puntabrava, is it normal at this time of the year to see so many or is it drought effected , I did not see one heading to Wales on the m4 , it's dead quiet at home
I am but a bit of dust relative to yourself Derrick.
my pal was up to Oxford and back to Carmarthen today.

we farm close to the A303, years ago used to be a steady stream of straw lorries heading down west, that sort of dwindled out, nowhere near so many. This year, l would agree, there seems to be a lot, heading down to Devon and Cornwall. Surprisingly, no one has lost a load at the Sparkford roundabout -- yet.
There could be a reason for that, the road is so busy now, they probably have to slow right down now, most days the traffic builds up there, and slows right down. Petrol expensive ? it certainly doesn't seem like it, when you see the amount of cars on that road !

we don't use Exeter market much through the summer, can be a nightmare, the record is 5.5hrs to get back, on a good day 1.25hrs.
Then you wonder just how much money they spend in the west country, must be a huge amount.

Hi all, , my questions to you guys that sell haylage in respectable quantities directly to end users is where do you see the price of your bales compared to last year?

Were just about to finish making our second cut and they've cost a bloody fortune to make them. we make approx 1500 round bales and buy in another 800-1000 hayalge and another 1000 hay brought down from England.]

Currently cheaper to use English made round bale hay than it is to use my own haylage

I don't think k we will be getting the true cost of production .
2 reasons ...cost too much to make and secondly the end user will struggle to pay the true cost plus haulage because the returns just aren't there ...interesting times ahead !

we have been offered some well overstood pp wrapped bales, they are not very appetising, to say the least. £25 bale, which probably doesn't cover his rent and the baling, how do you politely tell him, they are not worth that, which means he has to haul them ? We would take some, at a lot less money, but don't want to insult him.

You can only be straight and upfront with him. Start off by saying "we don't want to offend but this is the way it is "
....he probably knows in reality !

we hope to be taking on that land next year, so need to be political as well, especially as we would quite like to turn a few stock out down there.
But you are right, bit brutal, he's paid the rent till april, and all he has done with it, is make some rubbish bales. He couldn't put any sheep down there in the spring, to much hassle.

Might just be worth paying a bít over the odds if he lets you graze it straight away .
