Slug control in DD OSR

We often seem to struggle with controlling the slugs in the middle of the fields, while the 24m headlands seem fine apart from the outside 2m where the slugs come in from the grass margins. It would seem to me that the extra consolidation from turning etc is either killing the blighters or making their life unbearable so they don't consume the rape.So I was thinking of the best way to try and emulate this affect in the middle of the field,we have tried double rolling with paddles with only partial success.Would somthing like a Cultipress post drilling be better? Anyone tried it?

when you say DD what exactly do you mean ? ULD disc or tine or a single pass subsoiler or cultivator drill ?

As you have seen on your headlands 80% of the solution is getting consolidation right

We have dd with Amazone Primera and rolled once and twice. We have also dd with same drill and then subsoiled post drilling with a TWB fitted with DD press and then rolled once or twice. The post drilling subsoiling seems to give more reliable and quicker establishment than pure dd,I think this is due to quicker easier rooting,N mineralisation and may better consolidation due to the DD packer on the subsoiler.

We were able to ballast roll this year due to dry conditions. Slugs didn't go much on that! I have thought of a double press such as a Michael Moore with a Cambridge towed behind would do a good job?

when we had our Claydon the best tool to consolidate seemed to be a Simba DD press

Actually, I don't think any of this kills many slugs at all. The point is that the most important thing is to do away with all the cracks and crevices that they need to escape down in the day time. If they can't get underground quickly in the morning, birds will gradually pick them off. The other thing is that if there are no air spaces around the seed, the can't moesy (spelling?) around and keep bumping into more seed to eat.

Slug numbers are in direct proportion to the firmness of the seed bed, if it is wet at drilling and I can't do a proper consolidation, I get slugs.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
