Just changed my David brown 1394 for a 2008 Massey 5445 speedshift (I feel like I have entered the 20th century). Can anyone help recommend a back end oil? I have read that it has to be terrac9, then UTO then SUTO. Anyone got one or knows what would work. Sorry for a dumb question, just want to go through all the fluids and get it ready.

Iam sure we put 15 -30 in the backend. Will stand to be corrected tho

Have a look in the OP manual and see if you can find the oil spec? Sorry if you have done that already and I guess some manufacturers only quote a trade name of their own?

won't the oil supplier tell you what to use when you tell them the tractor and engine, back end etc?
Thought I would jus ask here first. many thanks. Also they are closed so I was on the internet, hence the question to experts with no commercial bias.

Any good quality transmission oil in a 10w/30 grade with the CMS 1145 on it is required. Your MF dealer may have it in a 10w/40 grade ( don’t confuse this as an engine oil ) which will be ok too.
The earlier spec’ of 1135 will be fine too. 70L required if changing.
Thank you, that's really helpful and greatly appreciated.

Morris oils have a facility on their web site which if you enter your tractor model it will tell you not only which of their oils are suitable but the quantities required too.
I seem to recall Fuchs do something similar too.

Any UTTO universal tractor transmission oil will do, SUTO super universal tractor oil won’t be quite the correct viscosity.
The viscosity has some flexibility. Super Universal is actually the MF recommended back end oil for these tractors. Once upon a time it was 15W-30 then 10W-30 as it is a better spec and slightly more expensive oil. For a few years now they have recommended Super Universal 10W-40, possibly because it cools the brakes better but just as likely because only Morris and MF/AGCO [made by Morris] offered it and at a slight premium price.

UTTO tends to be about the same or slightly lighter cold viscosity as 10W-30 super universal [about the same viscosity as 75 gear oil]. It is just as suitable as anything else but UTTO tends to be more expensive than Super Universal. All these oils are fine for the back end. [edit… not the 75 gear oil!]

What is NOT suitable are pure engine or gear oils. They do not have the friction modifiers necessary for wet brake and clutch operation.

No experience really with 54s but have seen issues with other wet clutch powershift tractors during first start up in cold weather with SUTO oil where they would either not drive or would throw up error codes or pressure light opening bypass valves intill warmed up a bit. Personally I would have no issues topping up with SUTO if that was only available but would use UTTO every time for an oil change and would recommend it to others. It’s the 32 Hydraulic oil in the back end that’s the killer……
