This is what is going to happen lots of talking not much eles. Nearly been long enough to to forget why they been subsidising agriculture. (Lots of Cheep food )Things will change quick if they get it wrong. I pretty sure that we wouldn't be farming with out it. Along with a lot of other farms.
I'm not sure the ones at the top no what to do that's the problem.

at last a comment from someone whos actually farming

I think the reason you have managed to pee of almost an entire forum is that people can see right through you. You are quick to put people like me in the 'playing at it' box when you really have no idea what I get up to. Comments like '40 acres and a few chickens' or whatever it was. 40 acres of broiler sheds would produce a tonnage of meat that would make your operation look distinctly hobby like. But you make assumptions anyway. You say you have 'done better' than me. Have you? Do you know that for a fact? Do you know for instance what my interest in CMC Markets is worth? I can't spend it (yet), just like you can't spend your land but do you know how much that is worth for a fact? I did earn it off my own back. Do you know for a fact what interests I have in other residential and commercial property? Do you know what long term share holdings I have? Do you know what I have in trust? Do you know what other companies and businesses I am involved in and what they are worth? I may be broke. I may be a billionaire, you don't know and even if you knew me you wouldn't know.

Your business apparently can't seem to survive without handouts. All of mine can and do. The fact is that I think we can all suss that you are probably a young chap who's Dad was smart and lucky and did well on some property development and bought a load of land. Now you think you are the 'BOSS' on the back of someone else's work and that your opinion is more important than a mere 40 acre Chicken farmer even though you keep coming on here asking everyone how to make money off a farm. Yours is apparently bought and paid for. If you can't make money off it I suggest you sell it while prices are good.

IN FARMING terms which is what were discussing ive built up a far more commendable business than you, and as for me not knowng this background information about u that makes me laugh as you are constantly having a dig at me saying I cant make money(without seeing my own financials) just because im always looking at ways to improve, did it occur to u that the subs I get each year mainly have been going on land repayments each year if I stood still and didn't invest I would have it easy, the comments I make about farmers needing subs are not about myself as ive said im talking about the industry as a whole, IF the UK want to get rid of subs fine but only if the rest of the EU and world are not getting one either

So you can't afford to pay off your own borrowings then?

the reason to scale up is simple, give your business clout and a mixture of enterprises to spread risk, ok someone with 40 acres and some chickens might be able to make a living for a short while BUT eventually what happens if the market for that product dies or is severly effected by something, its luck to hope to survive generations in this way if ur luck changes ur in trouble

Right. Right. Right. We know. We know. We know. Both of you have huge big willys. Both of you can pee 250 meters against a gale force wind. Fine! Excellent! Brilliant! Good for you both!
I can't get anywhere near 250 yards When you have a large bore you lose velocity. That's basic science.

There are economies of scale and there are dis-economies of scale. I don't know who ur is but I hope they are OK. What happens if an extreme left Labour govt gets in and puts business rates on ag land? The 40 acre man and his 2 or 3 chickens will be laughing his ass off. You are assuming that the huge scale monoculture farmer can not have a devastating crop ruin at a time when maybe things are a bit squeaky, which happens in all businesses. The bank says no and you are bust overnight. I've seen it in many industries. I wish you all good luck in avoiding that scenario. It simply won't happen to me. If I had only one business which was struggling and I felt so pessimistic about, the last thing I would do is borrow money to expand it. Common sense?

clearly I can as I finished paying up land last year and might be taking on more
IF the UK want to get rid of subs fine but only if the rest of the EU and world are not getting one either!!!!!!!!!
You might if your free £70k keeps arriving. Hell if somebody gave me £70k every year for doing nothing I think I might buy some more land as well. How can you go wrong when you get more payment for the land you bought at the expense of the taxpayer? They pay you to buy land, pay you to keep it and then pay you to buy more. Brilliant.

a mix of enterprises which compliment each other and a business with clout is what you need to be sustainable, you wont convince me ill have a stronger business with 40 acres

theres nothing to stop any business putting their profits into land that's their choice what they spend it on, as ive said earlier the taxpayer gains more than it looses through subs, im paying more tax than the farmers with smaller sfps anyway so im in effect helping fund subs

Pasty sounds like you want some free subs money you best go and buy some land. Or Rent some if that suits. Show us all how's it's done.
I get my share of free sub money. Easy life. I don't know many tax payers who get a free £3k just for existing, never mind £70k. I would much rather have £70k and don't blame Bossfarmer for wanting his dole trip to continue. Who wouldn't?
