Homes and businesses to be paid for exporting excess renewable energy to the grid.

BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) published a press release on Sunday 9th June about the Smart Export Guarantee – the new law to guarantee payment for solar homes providing excess electricity.

Due to begin on Jan 1st, 2020 and implemented on Monday 10th June, this law will enable homes and green businesses who generate renewable and low-carbon electricity to be guaranteed money for power supplied to the grid.

Legislation for the scheme to become mandatory for energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers has been set and will ensure that generators with a capacity up to 5MW will be paid for each unit tracked by their smart meter.

You will need a SMETS 2 meter which is a smart meter, they aren’t released yet, only version 1 is available. With version 1 your smart meter becomes a dumb meter if you swap the supplier that installed it e.g British Gas.

I assume this is only for new contracts , and not the old guaranteed 50% under the FITs scheme

Any export energy to grid only 4-5 p /kwhr so whats new or good about this?
The interesting thing isa the guys between 10-30 KW who are on the 50% tariff. I suspect some could do seriously better from any change and some of course worse.
I believe in the paperwork for such schemes there was a commitment that in the future when smart meters became available they would be changed to a true export tariff.
Currently HH metering for such arrays meant that it would never pay to meter. if they are exporting 20,000 units from a set up producing 28,000 units then it would be another £400 at 5.5p.

I have no clarity on the qualification, but I would suspect everyone would have the option as we will all have to install smart meters at some point.

This would appeal more to the newer installs that can have the option of choosing an export buyer creating a wider export market. This will create competition as suppliers vie for your valuable green electricity. Because renewable electricity is now a finite source which is more valuable creating higher prices.

Look more closely son and I’ll give you my take on it?

Renewable electrical energy is not being installed at the high pace it used to. The sun has set on mass roll out. We now have a finite resource that isn’t recognised for its clean value.

Around GB we have renewable power stations, solar, wind, etc, satellite power stations that charge throughout their run. This payment received is very undervalued and in my opinion should be at least doubled, or around 10/11p minimum. Average bought currently is 15p

These smart meters will provide a certified account of what you’ve contributed to the grid and be paid as equal as its cost you buy from your supplier. But, the supplier will now set the export price. All of the main providers will compete for your electricity, and it’s a finite resource. This means it’s rare but relied on, contributing to the national grid supply.

Crystal ball need possibly but we can live in hope.
Historically 4-5p per kwhr sold was /and is ,the norm.
Seeing will be believing if as you say it will double let alone treble in value.

4-5 p was actually the wholesale value of all power. Green should carry a premium. However wholesale prices have risen a lot and I am now getting far more for my exports

It’s inevitable, that is unless the big 6 fix the market as they are able to set export tariffs?
