So how many laws would I be breaking?

Need to gather a combine header up from about 35-40 mile away.

20footer.

combine don’t have a tow hitch on it to pull behind.

how much bother would I be in if I hooked it up to pickup and towed it back with that?

yep I know some will say JFDI but gotta navigate the ring road of a large town on the way back and I’m conscious we’re in 2019 and a world dominated by snowflakes!

It won’t be overweight and I’m not aware of any length problem, but are the tyres rated for more than say, 20mph?

Also it’s over 750 kgs which it obviously is, has it got overrun brakes?

If the tyres get hot you might have problems.

Header is unbraked. Technically can a tractor tow a trailer Unbraked any more legally than a pickup over 750kg?

was thinking about sticking a flashing light on pickup roof and doubling as the combine escort vehicle as well. So speed not an issue

I would use a tractor to be safe but no people who tow 30 foot trailers with no dolly behind pickups and never have had an issue, moving it is fine just the stopping element that would concern me on a long trip like yours

I moved our 20ft header with my van a couple of times this year, I was surprised at how much pulling it took.

Laws breaking?
No overrun brakes
Incorrect hitch
Too much nose weight
Too heavy
Possibly too long
Lights not within C&U regs
Tyres not rated for high speed

I'd do it...
Would be under 3.5 ton and a light board sorts that issue.

safe as houses on pin hitch

just lack of brakes and length imo

A header trailer is a trailed appliance if it's under a certain weight therefore doesn't need brakes when on a tractor.

Technically you'd need more than a trailer board, front and side markers and a fog light.

You did ask...

Unbraked trailers - max. 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less.

Why would it be legal on a combine yet not on a tractor ?

Beacon on pickup, lights on the back, first thing one Sunday morning while there's less traffic, pull it while you escort combine. If you have CB's take a spare to pop in the combine - instant communication enroute if you need it.
