Some guy cutting hedges

We were chuckling the other day about our neighbour's road hedges as it looked like he'd been on the Scotch and had decided to trim them up a bit. Every other 5 yards was hacked with bits left.

Roll on to yesterday and I'm wondering what the noise is up the lane. I look out the window to see a yellow flashing light on my road hedges and the sound is clearly a flail. So off I run to see what's up but he's scarpered by the time I get there leaving another botched job.

Now, I assume, pending contact with Highways that this is them doing bits on safety grounds but I have had no word from them and should RPA pop around, how do I explain that away? Some loon rocked up when I was having lunch, attacked the hedge in a drunken manner and then cleared off before I could get a number plate?

I presume RPA will know that Highways are doing this? Don't see why I should have to explain. It's not even like they needed doing this year.

Shouldn't be a problem with the rpa if it is a highway facing hedge but it might be worth contacting highways about the crap quality of work.

I know we can trim them for safety. Issue being that they are my hedges and someone has come along and done the job (badly) and not even mentioned it. I assume all will be fine but what if some dick head comes around and asks why my hedges have been trimmed and he decides that they did not need doing for safety? I don't even know who did it. I would like to know who has been out doing it. At least have the courtesy to come and ask me first. I was in the house at the time.

Hedges done for safety are usually (around here cos I'm one of them) carried out by a contractor. The council will go and destroy neglected hedges that become a nuisance, but they won't even do a third pass up above, so you end up with a bloody drooping canopy.

Can you actually complain about quality of work? I was extremely tempted to do a tidy pass over a 'finished' hedge which runs along the way to our place, absolutely horrendous, no pride, just rip it off and go.

At least they didnt turn up unannounced and spray some noxious substance around a good sized area around a 30 mph sign and kill the hedge off as they did here a few years ago?
Only noticed by me when the hedge was well on the way to dying.

We have a local contractor who has a bit of a bee in his bonnet about the fact that we didn't start using him when he moved to self employment hedge-trimming, we stuck with our existing contractor. We have had several complaints to Parish Council about our hedges not being trimmed enough which they have reluctantly agreed were unfounded - we trimmed them as part of our normal routine shortly afterwards anyway.

We have noticed a few of our other roadside hedges sometimes have a chunk trimmed off in the summer and have always assumed it is him as it is when we know he has been trimming in the area.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
