Heard on the radio today that there has been a record volume of sheep-meat processed this December due to high prices and a feed pinch throughout the country.
Plus an excellent lambing in most regions.

Parts of the country regarded as "summer-safe" seem to be struggling for growth still but much of the country has now had some usable rainfall - Invercargill in particular has had 9.8mm for the month compared to the expected average of 91mm, on the back of the driest weather since records began.
Record warmth too, up to 33° and not dropped below 12° here in a month. 31° today

A similar story here but will be supplementing just to ease demand, we're probably growing about 20% of what we could be currently.

Beef holding and lamb + mutton well up there at the processors.. steer $5.10, bull $4.90, lamb (p+y grades) $6.25-$6.75 and mutton $3.40-4.40 (all per kg DW)

@lloyd there's the bulletin

Very interesting, thanks Pete(y)
Lamb average of $6.50 equates to £3.41/kg dw. Just looked on Eblex website and their average is £4.10/kg dw.

Once or twice on here, I've suggested we ought to have a 'sticky' comparison thread for beef and sheep meat prices for UK, NZ, Aus, USA. Perhaps you could be our 'NZ corespondent'

Undercutting effing kiwis- to be frank this is about as good as it gets, although they are predicting good things for later season lamb.. just the usual dip is likely for Easter and the changeover to frozen etc..
Last Easter signaĺled the price to climb (wasnt on the cards, normally it plummets) and it has stuck, some of my lambs aren't far off now.

... some are a way off though, by eye I'd guess across this 400 the average would be 31kg or so?
I'm not a good guesser.
Owe us $61 so if they go at 20kg dead that's double-your-money territory.
Low FEC counts, from what I've done on that front, I won't need a worm-intervention.
Suits me!!

Here's the lowdown if anyone wants it.

Interesting to see breeding ewes commanding good money, up to $250 and 2ths $200,, considering quitting mine and buying more cheaper ewe lambs, $100 they were and I haven't paid for them yet
Could almost be worth it, $100 capital gain plus 1.1 lambs @$125...

No money in sheep? :cautious:

Thanks for the info on prices Pete.:bookworm:
Fourth in from the left in the first bunch looks to be lame.
I can pop over and treat it but i will have to charge as you are a rich Kiwi farmer!:joyful:

Look like good tight skinned lambs(y)

One of them came off the truck with a broken leg so wifey jammed a short bit of pipe insulation on it.
Looking at the picture it could be that one..

Some good tallies of stores this season, hear a sale advertised for 12000 stores and 2000 ewes but they will be getting fairly dry up at Castlerock.
