Ive never seen an issue with any crop being checked by pre em. Having peculiar weather at the time is more problematic I feel.
Maybe you are right but I have had some very stressed crops in the past particularly on shallow chalk soils and always much worse where pre-em applied. As said this time only treated worst 10ha for Bg will see how the next worst 10ha looks and see if i think I should have done it.

Thin chalks are a classic though, they travel better due to self draining so you are able to drill deadly early. In reality the soil has no warmth in it and Feb-March can be pretty horrible sometimes. Whip out with some mancuflo once it has leaves on it.
 
Did all our Jan drilled spring barley with a peri-em spray last Friday. Figured warm weather and moisture would trigger a flush (can now see 1 leaf BG) and enough rain for chem to work. Looking today there is some which should take up chem, but not very much, and crop is now well away so should have a good head start. Also had a blocked coulter which I was worried would let BG come through without crop competition.
