Spring barley

I’ve got a 28 acre reseed that’s had stubble turnips among it and grazed off with lambs , the grass take is best described as average but well grazed with lambs so possibility it might come good , could I direct drill spring barley in it ? Soon as it’s dry enough give it a good pasting with slurry then direct drill spring barley ? Or something else for cattle feed bedding triticale ?

Nice land!

I put a field in at the end of August and I've not dared to graze it so far as it's never been dry enough yet.

If it's been hard grazed it might tiller ok, overseed with clover will fill in any gaps.

Any photos of what it's like now?
I will take some tomorrow , doesn’t look as pretty as that Denis has had a detrimental affect ?

Barley hates compaction i would run a cultivator through it or plough it , and carfull with the slurry or it will be as flatt as a pancake. The lambs will have put enough back

"Soon as its dry enough..." that will be a while away in these parts... :cautious: Current long term forecast is wet and very windy, followed by wet and windy then possibly a short period of a bit less wet and windy followed by another week of more wet and more windy....

I believe apple trees often need more copper, applied as copper sulphate, that fact that is acts as a fungicide as gets applied at certain point during the growing season is purely coincidental :woot:

Crimp isnt a bad shout actually. Avoids the barley cutting madness and no dust or worries about drying.
We’ve started crimping more this last few year it’s a lot let stressful combine Can start earlier and finish later just tip the trailers up in the shed and crimp it when it’s raining and best of all Get a bit more time to get a forage crop in for winter
