Less than 1% if Linseed growers get over a tonne to the acre. If you want to realistically grow it then budget on 0.6 tonne to the acre.

Also don’t pay £120 for seed.
Don’t grow on contract.

Check the varieties for yield performance and buy on a SEED only contract and then use farm saved seed and sell open market and then yes you may make some money, but not a lot!
so true. best post in ages

I was torn this morning between drilling linseed now while he conditions are good but going cold next week or waiting. I decided to wait but it doesn’t feel good not to be drilling while I could.

If it was me I’ll be biding my time it was -2 the other morning .
For an experiment why don’t you go and drill a little bit and leave it for a week or so .
Then drill the rest when it warms up and watch what happens.
We won’t be starting to drill until it’s the 10th of April

I had the same debate over drilling peas, came to the same conclusion.

Used to get the same discussion with folk down here regarding planting maize.

Me: 'it's very cold at night, frost on the car windscreen this morning as well, best leave it for now'.

Farmer: 'but it won't grow in the bag...'

If I was yielding 0.6 tonne per acre
I would give up growing it .
and also try moving it without a contract.

have never grown on a contract and have always moved it no problem at much higher prices than contracts I’ve seen

spring linseed was one of the best gross margins crops we grew last year

have 250 ac going in this time

big rate of FSS, 75% of N in seedbed, herbicide them harvest

don’t spend on it
Its an aweful crop nobody should grow it, its hard to establish, flax beetle will not leave it alone, then harvesting the crop is an absolute night mare, just do not do it!!
