starter/battery issues

I am the ( sometimes ) proud owner of a universal 643 64 hp 4wd tractor. I am having issues with the starting circuit. I thought the battery was done, it is 10 years old, but after a load test at the local shop, it was determined the battery was fine. When the battery is in place, it behaves as if it is flat as a board. The clicking from the solenoid is all the sound she makes unless I boost it with a car/truck. Has anyone encountered this problem before, and if so, what was wrong and how did you deal with it. I bow to your experience and wisdom.

Definitely check the earth cable, particularly the connection to the chassis. Its quite common for rust to form between the two surfaces and allow enough current through to power the ignition lights on the dash, but as soon as you attempt to draw any serious current all you get is that click in the starter motor. Even if the earth cable to chassis connection looks fine, take it apart and clean it.

Don't guess, get somebody to try to start it while you check the voltage with a multimeter. If the starter is seeing 12V then it's the problem, but I doubt it if it will start with a jump.

Keep moving your test points until you find the voltage drop.

Had a similar problem, the fault was the starter solenoid! I checked all the earth cables, still the same, then I checked the starter and solenoid, the small 10mm nut on the solenoid was just slightly lose, half a turn maybe, and it turned over twice as fast and started....

If you are approaching the suicidal stage, get a good auto electrician in and avoid losing hair. Worked for me when all sorts of strange electrical things started happening.

And when you do find a good one, cherish and love them. Feed him tea and biscuits as required and save his number in your phone afterwards, PROPERLY identified so as not to lose it...

Had a maxxum 5130 which was always a lazy starter and one day wouldn't go, solenoid on the starter looked cooked as the boy had been overkeen, threw in the towel and got a new starter which wasn't a lot better but started her for a few years until solenoid also looked cooked. Ordered a new solenoid which didn't fit the replacement but did fit the original that was laying in the yard still So swapped the starters back. It went like never before... whizzed it straight into life and hasn't been a problem since. So I vote starter solenoid.

Tired starter motor. Replace with a high geared one from @ACEngineering

Seems i'm wrong there are Iskra options, several in fact! but the best one would be the compact 3.2kw gear reduction.

I cant find a decent price on it yet though, £345 + VAT seems to be were its at:unsure:
