Starting salary of assistant herdsman

What’s the hours and schedule?

60 hours a week, 12 on 2 off with holidays aswell obviously, they are salary based but payed by the hour so if we are busy and they work more hours they get paid and if they are late in a morning I don’t have to say anything because they aren’t getting paid until they clock in on the machine, saves me moaning at them and is fair all round

In Denmark minimum legal salary is with todays exchange rate £30.600 for 37 hours weekly and 5 weeks paid holiday/year. Extra if work is outside 7 to 16 and on weekends.

I didn’t know there was so big differences in so short distances.

If you hope for anyone with any skills, it’s from £36.000 and up. I wouldn’t hire the ones who get less than 35.000.

Herdsmen is from 42.000 to above 50.000 if they are good. Herdsmen are usually not on locked hours, but do not expect to work over 45 hours average.

Does this include a house or would the person have to provide that for themselves? What sort of money is housing with you?

Now i think your stingy thats only £11.50 an hour my high 20s plus house comes at at £13.60 an hour.

It all comes down to hours and this industry does not have a future attracting staff on 60 hour weeks 12 on 2 off.

Well it’s 10 hours a day on 12 days and it’s £12.50 an hour, I had lads moaning when they didn’t get enough hours

When can I start ?
Maybe fairly soon.

We have a third person really only an apprentice role. Current member started last july never worked on a farm before and older than normal late 20s. Only paid minimum wage no house but told him at recruitment if he wanted i would grow him into the better paid role but it was unlikely be with me.

Today hes told me hes been offered an assistant role and house with appropriate pay and he will be up to the job.

The thing that makes me most proud is we have achieved this in 7 month's and he doesnt really want to leave but the progression and pay plus house will probably make it a no brainer for a young family.

Now to do it all again but the good ones always add to your business no matter how short their stay.

Yes far better a good person leave after a year for something better than a crap person leave after a year because they are struggling

What a fantastic, commendable and enlightened post. I wish I'd found you when I was doing my Pre College year :)

Youd need to pay me 50k to work with cows housed 365. :sneaky:

Well i only hire those who really think it’s the right job for them :ROFLMAO:

This is without house. We have a house where they can rent a room with shared everything else for about £200/month including all but internet.
I currently have three people living there.

A house or apartment in a nearby town is about £650/month plus everything. Probably about £1000/month total.

Holiday in there too isn’t there
Yes and if you treat holiday fairly you simply pay them the same that week and dont expect them to turn up.

If you pay minimum wage you pay £8 hour for 37 hours. You cant argue that because they have 3 weeks off their average pay is
£15392/ 49/37 £8.49.

They get paid 8 an hour whilst they work and 8 an hour whilst on holiday.

I hired a herdman who started 3 month ago. He start on about 49.000 including house. Then he will get a bonus thats 10% of extra profit i make, compared to a top 10 percent fraktil of about 1000 farms we benchmark against. So the closer we get to those 10% the more pay he get. There is room for quite a raise.
The first 15% we go up, will cover his pay over a student and the previous result. I hope we will close 50% of the gap in 2 years, and then he is cheap.
