Stress and suicide

Not in anyway to compare or contrast the post office scandal covered up for many years by a government body. However has the question ever been asked in regard to the government bodies that we as farmers have to cope with including a non government body ie Red Tractor about how many mental health issues and suicides have and could be attributed to these regulatory agencies, or even miscarriages of justice's. Perhaps it is time for farmers to highlight the real problems created by people that have no real understanding of agriculture or farming. Until we have some details of the number of people effected how are we to highlight these issues. Farming being a lonely carer, we tend to keep these issues to ourselves.
There are some people working within these agencies that have the same arrogance attitude towards farmers as the investigating officers that were within the post office. No doubt there are many farmers who have been tipped over the edge by these over zealous officials.

Sadly there are many cases, but its usually caused by Defra or animal welfare trading standards inspectors. RPA inspectors can cause it aswell, but not as much now as there are no financial penalties for non compliance.

Red tractor audits/inspections are still voluntary, well, unless you are a milk seller. But Defra,APHA,RPA,Environment Agency, and Trading Standards are mandatory.

Not many farmers want to talk about any problems they have,or might have had either on a public forum.

One Trading Standards employee actually said to me,in pure Post Office vein , "you are the only farmer who has this problem"......................when i know for a fact from talking to my friends and other farmers that i am definitely not the only one.

However, they are not all like that, and one inspector lass i had recently could not have been more helpful.

Late may and early june was always a time to recuperate and take some time off.
Now that window is filled with iacs forms and farm assurance visits.
Its never ending pressure.

Four farmers did it in this area in last ten yrs
They were all tenants and had all been evicted from farms

You can be ok and still talk/ want to talk / be Able to talk about the subject of suicide , depression being overwhelmed by stuff .getting diagnosed /;or not with an illness like bipolar .and the like.and more.

It's a subject that's as worthy as discussing broken bones and the likes cancer et al.

Yes but I thought it was worth asking. He could pm me or I would like to think anyone on this forum and they would try and help if we could.
Worth asking even if it's only to point out to whoever reads this thread that the OP has had an inspection and then started this thread soon after.....
maybe they aren't depressed but its easy to see why you might be in that situation

Well written and thought provoking opening post and subsequent replies but I can't help worry that threads with the dreaded "S" word in the title are a magnet to anyone having a bit of a wobble, which, when u consider everything we have to battle against to run a farm isn't surprising every now and then! When you think about it the external auditors that we have to try and please have an easy job, they have a set of standards written down for them and they just have to tick a box if we comply,we on the other hand have to work very hard against the weather, time, financial, staffing, and god knows how many other pressures 365 day of the year to meet all these outcomes in a single sitting! So if you are reading this at your wits end, the sun will still come up tomorrow with a discrepancy in your ear tag records or not and I want you to bloody well see it! If you are having a wobble ring somebody YOU care about and just check on THEM,who knows where the conversation will end up and I guarantee when you come off the phone you will feel better about yourself just for having done it! Chin up you feker, your awesome!
