Struggling to fall asleep

Normally I had no problem falling asleep, but over the last month or so when I go to bed I can't get to sleep, it's almost like my brain goes to overdrive and I have all kinds of thoughts gong through my head.
I'm not helping myself as i'm on my laptop all evening until bed, but never been a problem til recently, people have suggested reading a book but i'm not convinced as when I was younger I had the radio on and that kept me awake too.
I have a feeling it's stress of the weather and being behind with work that's the problem is the issue, it's driving my missus crazy and she's suggested I sleep downstairs.
Short of alcohol or tablets I don't know what to do.

I don't have trouble going to sleep as long as the TV is on, just to take my mind off the day's problems but I often wake up at 3/4am and there's no way I can get back to sleep then. Usually nod off about 5.55 and my alarm goes off at 6. The worst thing about waking up in the early hours is not being to do anything about it without waking the rest of the house up so usually end up staring into the darkness with all sorts of things going through my mind...

Could you put the tv back on quietly?

I’m the same I usually put something on the tv or even on YouTube on my phone on the bedside table just some sort of background noise and I fall asleep in five mins unless I’ve seriously got something worrying me on my mind.

BTW, I do feel my problem are a bit trivial, which I do feel embarrassed about compared to the sheep farmers amongst us who are having a hellish time lambing in this weather

Just get rid of the mrs!! No trouble here but like the post above, often wake at 3-30/4-30 and that's it, struggle to go back to sleep, if I do then I always oversleep and wake up like a bear with a sore head. I always find drinking plenty of water seems to help for some reason re going to sleep, I usually have a pint of water before I go to bed but when I forget I sometimes struggle to get to sleep. I know it may not be ideal but seems to work for me

I have a Kindle, one of the old ones with a little tiny streetlamp out the front.

I read the classics - Dickens etc, at the moment it is Rider Haggard - complete works (which is brilliant by the way) Samuel Pepys diary - that took nearly a year. Most of these are free or less than a pound.

Anyway the kindle automatically turns off after 10 minutes of not turning a page, I rarely turn it off by hand, I always fall asleep.

The tiny light is good to read by and it doesn't wake the dragon on the other side of the bed.

Revolutionised my sleeping patterns, I daren't ask the current Mrs Pm if it has made me a better person though as she tends to be a little reticent when asked that kind of question.

It's not trivial, your missus has told you to go sleep somewhere else. Far from trivial.
I reckon it will pass once we get a bit of warm dry weather and you catch up a bit. I suffer sometimes from similar and one night last week I was up til 3:30.
Tonight I'm knacked and off to bed right now.

Well you see it as a problem which means it isn't trivial. Stress can be very debilitating if you don't do something about it. Time out/away from work is very important. For me getting physical exercise helps me sleep, I ride a push bike, it's surprising how sedentary farming has become!
