Stubble turnips after WW.

What’s peoples experiences with putting stubble turnings in after ww on timings? Sooner the better or would I have time to lightly work, germinate weeds etc then glyphosate then drill? It’ll be a first this year so keen to try and make a good go of it.

Obviously depends on harvest date, but normally it’s getting late after wheat. Last year we did some, but usually it’s after winter barley.

In the eastern counties you might manage it if you used some luck, good weather and some glyphosate to hurry the wheat up abit. Direct drill them and spray out the volunteers.

Turnips want to be by end of July really with minimal soil disturbance to preserve moisture. Direct drill them and spray out the volunteers / crap after..

We put them in on wb stubble, mix them in with any ods and sods of fert and chuck them on with the spreader, scratch them in, roll and pray for rain,, as long as they get away before what's been blown out the harvester doesn't smother them, they will soon thicken up

Not very well if run on directly but if you keep to tramlines and have a wide bed it helps. Baling traffic could be a problem but it's surprising how they fill in if conditions are right.

You would need rain before harvest to get them going, not good establishment in a dry time but seed is cheap and can maybe be spun on by slug pelleter on sprayer up tramlines.

Chap I did some combining for used to put them on with a fiddle drill, walking through the standing crop. Worked OK if rain.

A dodgy method in truth. Best direct drill as soon as field cleared and straw baled off. Don't move the soil, other than with the drill.

we did some last year, 3rd week august, broadcast, scratched in and rolled. did it within a couple of days of combining then caught a shower of rain. turned out well. i wouldn't have thought you would have time to mess about trying to get a weed chit as-well.

Shouldn't be a problem but as said before there wouldn't be much time for a chit. Just a light disc, spin it on and roll. Spray volunteers when you know turnips are a success.

We usually do 80/100 acres after WW and have had some good crops.It seems to stay mild longer into the autumn,these days,which obviously helps.

We normally direct drill after spring barley but are going to have a go at blowing them on in the standing crop this year to get them earlier. Will be baling straw

This method works well with plenty of wet weather just after you've blown them in. The plants under the swaths and in the wheelings do recover of your soil is in good condition. I did this in summer 2017 into standing Siskin wheat at the end of July. The wheat was cut 5 days later but rain meant we couldn't bale the straw for another 10 days, by which time the turnips were trying to grow through some of the swaths.

Mine are all sown after wheat. This is fine, but it needs to be early in August for a good crop. It's amazing how much growth happens in July. I'd recommend you sow an early maturing variety of wheat and prioritise the harvesting of this.

We have done it - mahoosive crop - mainly due to going on early - losses from traffic would be more than made up for by increased yield from earlier sowing - only thing Is spread will be uneven if on 24m as they don’t carry far - but that seemed to even out to look pretty even by grazing

Was the double entendre intended? Worth considering if spinning them into wheat after osr & a slug history. You can't legally blow slug pellets into a standing crop you're about to harvest.

Always direct drill here. Never have done a stale seedbed. The less disturbance and moisture loss the better.

Tend to have a lot less issue with volunteers after wheat too, compared to after winter barley. I have never used a herbicide after wheat. If you are grazing them then everything gets eaten anyway.

+1. We're 850+ feet above sea level and manage to grow a reasonable crop after wheat if harvest is early. Also agree that Fusilade or similar is not needed unlike after barley.
