Sudden Death of Sucklers in This Weather.

EDF MANN are the molasses boys. Good outfit in my experience- now in the long and distant past. Cheaper to have the stuff delivered in bulk though.
Thats the name, wisny far away :p.
They used to bring it in tanks and pump it into my own IBC, but this year they said it was more cost effective to bring it ready to lift off in container!!???

Mag chloride flakes in the water is another cheap way of doing it but you will need to dose all available sources of water as I'm not sure it tastes that nice.
No it doesn’t!
40g / head a day in every water trough starting in March for an April turnout, and going through until June is what we do here.

Anyone else had a rough time of time of it? We had a dead cow on Wednesday morning and then two more side by side this morning, all in the same field.
Its very mild to bring them in ,which brings its own problems. They look content enough and have plenty straw , molasses and mag buckets, their spring calves are on them and creep fed. We have never had an issue for years, so a bit pee'd off.
Vet was here , its not anthrax.....and will give mag and ca level results later.
Anyone else have stock not liking it?

S.
Blackleg possibly?

We had a few last week too. Mainly older cows.

Was speaking to the knackery man about it and he said he was picking up a lot of dead cows last week.
I had 2 in quick succession this time last year. When I phoned the knackery and she asked the cause of death, I said staggers, she didn’t sound surprised so I asked if they have been picking up a lot of staggers casualties…. “Oh Christ aye” was the reply!

Must say this thread has got me worried, there’s a batch of autumn calvers out in a field here with 0 shelter the way it’s coming tonight, they were needing a fresh tub yesterday and I forgot it this morning 🤦‍♂️. Do have good silage though.

I think your trouble will be mag. I'd probably suggest some hi mag crystalyx tubs....,, enough so that they can all have a go with out bullying or shy feeders not getting a chance. One thing we used to do with crystalyx tubs is to put a big hi mag Rocky lick in the middle and it slowly sinks in to the tub as they lick it.

as an aside.... we recently had a bull found to be walking in circles, about a 15 yard radius, walked into the landrover, truck or anything in the way. Bl00dy dangerous actually as nothing would stop him. A bit slobbery and preferred to lean up against a trailer for some kind of reassurance/support. Managed to get him in a yard by walking him round the outside of three fields and then guided by the telehandler and three tractors into the yard gate.... kind of bump steering him/
b12 made no difference (assuming ccn) but big doses of pen&strep did help so we're assuming listeriosis. Was on clean grass, no silage or hay. No other cattle affected so far. Still improving and far from fixed but at least we can go in the yard to give him a jab without fear of being crushed!

Recommended rate is 3lb a head, paid £296 in tote bags last month.
I feed 2lb as there are other mag sources in field (straw molassed and tubs). Possibly overkill but have suffered in the past!!
Got me worried now. I still have 50+ on some of the roughest ground in the district with only an occasional tub for a supplement!

You'll can see them easier from your house than I can from mine if you've got a decent set of binoculars.

Im worried as well after reading this thread.Weather has been absolute sh!te here today. Lost one a few years ago even with Hi Mag buckets out.Think i will head into town tomorrow morning and get 6 Crystalyx buckets. Anything is cheaper than losing one.
