Sugar beet price 2024

Most, me included, got an email on Friday, more emails will go to those that haven't heard today.
I didn't get extra tonnage and neither did most people I've spoken to, although some have and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

I've spoke to my fieldsman and he's as bewildered by it as the rest of us, I did ask the question how many new growers had they got???? I reminded him that if they had took on new growers rather than looking after existing ones, they just need to remember who it was who stuck with them growing beet in the bad years!!!!!

I did wonder if BS are still on there pursuit of divide and conquer and they think going forward they stand a better chance of winning over new growers with Mickey mouse contract offers than us longterm growers.
Time will tell but it'll be interesting to see what's what.

I am paid on 27 miles. I had honestly given up all hope of getting what I offered to grow, and have been sat at home looking at cashflows and cropping plans. It is very difficult to know how these contracts are decided.

Only a mile more than me.
I had hoped to get the extra I wanted as I'd planned to have that as my break crop on a new block of land, not just this year but every year going forward.
Im frustrated, not just because of the financial/cash flow aspects and cropping plans but because I love growing beet!!!
I don't want to fanny about with beans, peas, linseed, osr.😥

I manage 2 contracts and due to rotation one of the businesses beet area was down by 50% in 2023 and was encouraged by fields person to put down the estimated tonnage and correct acreage (keeps the computer system happy apparently). Adding back the tonnage in 2024. Fast forward a year and have applied for some extra tonnage (not 50% maybe 25%) and it's a no from BS. Rather frustrating to have lost the tonnage as having grown beet on the farm since ww2 not missing a year.

Fair comment about the true cost to grow crashbox.
