Teat sealing heifers.

Erm... didn't read thread title properly 🤦‍♀️ It takes that long to seal the cows, including the ones that have only had one calving - so could still be referred to as heifers by some.
Do you seal heifers that haven't calved?
I'm not the one doing the sealing btw, I'm the tube passer (lackey by name...)

We use a squeeze crush, can do 20 an hour easy, even sit on a stool to do it. Just squeeze them up and open the door, quiet as you like. Decent squeeze crush is just a brilliant tool for keeping an animal quiet. We were having horrendous calving time mastitis in heifers, almost a third affected, in our autumn herd linked to serious wart issues. It was so depressing to see, and each year was getting worse than the last. Teat sealing 6 weeks pre calving has almost totally stopped the problem.

Do you do any pre calving teat spraying?
I try to run ours through the parlour 3 times a week to check and teat spray them

I particularly like the 'youthful' - today I found out our teenage apprentice thought I was 60+ 😱😱😱
I always thought I looked ok for my age (a mere 45), shows what farming does to us. Good job I'm thick (and apparently aged and wrinkly) skinned 😂

We've had big problems with warts on heifers teats, they're away in quite a buggy place and our spot on application probably wasn't good enough. We put flectron tags in them last year, they lasted nearly the promised 5 months and only 2/35 heifers have visible warts, so we run them through the parlour for a few weeks before calving and pick them off.
