Is it worth measuring dwell angle and setting points gap to get correct dwell angle then resetting timing?

Can't find dwell angle in the manual but have seen 52 degrees floated about on the net for a four cylinder engine generally.

Yes 52 degrees dwell (closed) was the magical number back in the day. But I would think, the writing of the Ferguson manual would have been before that was a measurement to be concerned about.

If you wanted to get fancy, a small 12V bulb connected across the points, for setting static timing.
You can connect it from - negative on the coil to the chassis.
When the bulb lights (ignition switch ON) you have an air gap in the points, so you can set point of ignition. In your case 4 degrees BTDC, I think you mentioned.

been talking to a man who has been in the motor trade for many years, and he informs me that the marking on coils was changed from SW and CB, to + and - to ensure coils were connected up correctly, whatever the vehicle earth was.He said that Lucas sent out a note stating this.

New coil connected as per advice. Engine now starts and runs very well without cutting out. Looks like it was definitely the coil.

Oil pressure and temperature are where they should be.

I have learned a lot doing this project thanks to folks on this forum.

If I was doing it again I would use new bolts for the mains bearings and the head from the outset. I'd perhaps be a bit more careful with setting up the valve timing, maybe trying something with dial gauge indicators on the tappets with a bit of load on them, and I'd be more careful with my torque wrench settings.

Cheers.

Spot on actually.

Out of interest, engine parts, (including clutch kit), crank regrind and head overhaul came to £1200 including VAT

80 hours of my time £800 ish.

Very extensive overhaul though. No stone left unturned.

So there we have it. £2k to get it running to a good standard.
You under sell yourself......

Well it was a job done for a friend of the family I suppose during a slack time of the year. Didn't feel like work really as it was an enjoyable change for me, though not sure I'd want too many to do.

I just hope those on here who have helped me out don't start charging consultancy fees!;)

I did my other half's TEF, full engine rebuild, front axle, clutch etc etc, full shot blast and all panels sorted out then 2k painted took me 4 weeks and I think the parts were circa 2.8k with new tyres on top. I would have been better off buying one already restored but I know it's all been done right and hopefully should last another 40 years. I actually enjoy doing them but if I charged for my time it wouldn't be worth it but it is satisfying to do them right.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
