It was fully home, the pin retracted itself without me touching the button.
It did it several times.
Its a bad, dangerous design. A manitou pin is failsafe
I disagree. They only need hydraulic power to open not hold shut so it fails safe if you check (visually and by loading the attachment) that its locked home in the first place. You should ALWAYS disconnect the pipe for the locking pin same as you should always shut the tap on a JCB. Many don't but you should.

So if you have to disconnect the pipe for the locking pin, what is the point ? The idea of hyd locking is u dont get off the seat.
I didnt know you had to disconnect the pipe, as others will too, so it is a safety issue.

Fair enough. You didn't obviously read the manual/and or get it explained by a competent person. I agree its not an over helpful design but that's the way it is. As I said I'm fairly certain JCBs should have the tap shut when you use the hyd locking to prevent accidents which is no different to getting out and taking off a pipe. Anyway, you know for next time(y)

JCBs have an electrical diverter in the cab that diverts flow from carriage to pickup hitch. Does similar job to tap so why not use that?

Excavators with quick hitches don’t have taps or pipes to disconnect outside the cab?

Agreed but 360s should have a double acting hitch which will not let bucket drop even if one side opens due to ram failure. Usually powered by a big coil spring.

Again the schaffer has this thing right, to release the attachment you have to press and hold a button at the same time as using the aux to release it. if you don't hold the release button at same time it wont release. That's why the schaffer has a diverter valve on the swan neck and a cheap coiled wire up the side of the boom with a 7 pin plug each end. okay easy to rip off but its also just as easy to replace.

Made a pin n cone to manitou adapter plate a few years ago, probably the easiest conversation to make, but don’t use any manitou attachments anymore so it got chopped up and used for the base to my bag lifter

yes double acting ram on jcb but not double acting hitch. Look at the geith 360 hitches. Picture easier to explain than words
I thought all (new) excavator quick hitches sold since about 2007 had to follow this design principle. There was a string a fatalities and near misses with buckets detaching and HSE were very close to banning them outright. The manufacturers agreed to redesign them to make them fail safe.

Why can't it be homemade? They sell brackets for welding onto attachments, so what's the difference if you weld a bracket onto another headstock?

Is it illegal to cut a worn tow hook off a trailer and weld a new one on?

Do you mean illegal, or just that you wouldn't trust your own abilities with a welder?
Could probably buy a ce sticker or plate on flea bay from China.:rolleyes:o_O

Hall engineering made top class ones. Always posting on FB pictures of their work. Don’t know what’s going on now after their bad luck.
Who’s bad luck?

Yes seen a lot of Halls work on Facebook.
