Telehandler PUH

We've done a deal on a ex hire JCB 542-70, 600hrs to replace our Schaffer pivot. Looking to get a PUH on it, from what I've seen of the Dromone and Bill Bennett type they are double acting with a cab operated cable latch to lock and release. I'd prefer single acting one like the type on our forage harvester, it is raised to full height and latches lock in and then weight is released and the opposite to lower, springs assist it downwards when unladen. Anyone know if this type can still be got anywhere short of going to the breakers yard?

Why? Just buy the factory rated hitch. It will bolt straight on.

Personally I'd have a double acting one any day of the week, if a trailer sinks you can push your way under it better then.
I'm not sure a single acting one would work on a JCB anyway, the auxiliaries never go down to zero pressure I don't think.
Both will need a latch cable to the cab and I'm fairly sure the genuine one would be easier to fit.

Also before fitting one I would check that the machine is actually plated to tow a trailer, otherwise you may have a lot of grief.

Didnt think of that.

Yes tank is pressured so hitch will need some good springs on it to return it especially when it gets old or bent like the single acting ones often do!

Legal towing maybe an issue too as if registered as special vehical cause it's a construction spec I dont think you can tow with it.

Not always easy to get them changed either depending who answers the phone at DVLA!

Got customer trying to register an older hander construction handler for first time and he is having a nightmare with DVLA🤦‍♂️

Will be registered in Ireland as agricultural tractor, 542-70 Agripro so not a construction machine.

We used to use a double acting puh on the old Matbros and Terex and it was pretty brutal, all or nothing when letting them down. Want the puh mainly to service the trailer at the grain dryer so not worried about sinking, we currently tie a tractor up offloading from drier into trailer which is a pain considering the forklift is always there too.

They’re very controllable on the JCBs, have a go with one and you won’t worry about it.

JCB hitches are slow going down when piped up from factory so not really a problem, if you dont have the correct pipe work from factory and doing it your self then just buy a cheap adjustable flow restrictor that only restricts the flow one way, yes there is such a thing, had them from sparex before for post knockers with single rams.

But don’t forget you will fill trailer up with hyd oil which mightn’t be the best idea if you are tipping the trailer? Which you probably are on drier work?
