Telehandler

Hi

We are finding things a bit of a pita without a decent vehicle that can be used to lift items around the farm, deliveries off low loaders etc, so in addition to our previous investigation into potentially aquiring 3PL forklift - we have also been looking at telehandlers for around 8k (inc vat as we are not vat registered), so for the ones in the know - would we be stupid buying an older telehandler of this price range / age - or are there still good reliable vehicles to be had - if so, which ones are the ones where parts etc are still readily available for the inevitable repairs and servicing?

Thanks in advance.

I had to borrow an old Sanderson 6 22 at harvest due to breakdown and it was perfectly adequate, but worth only about £3.5k.on a very good day.
So yes, I'd have an old machine on your budget, PROVIDED that I had had it checked over first by somebody who knows these machines.
Farmers Guide often has ex-farm machines, that have lived on arable units and are nice and tidy/maintained as a result:rolleyes:.

We paid jusg under 10k inc vat for our Matbro. Spent approx £1000 in repairs and servicing in 4 years and 1500 hours. We’ll spend a bit more on her soon, put a new seat in. Best spend we’ve ever done. Would have ours fully re-conned if we had the time to put it off the road for a month!

Its very hard to find a half decent machine under £10k, its not impossible but there's a high chance you can end up with a pile of rubbish IMO.

£8k inc vat isn't going to go far, and there's a high chance what ever you buy will need work doing to it and not being vat reg that could really hurt the pocket!

If your wanting a legal one with lola cert or one that would pass a lola test then it'll be near impossible!

Your money will go much much further on a rough terrain masted forklift, like a JCB 926 or Manitou M26-4 etc etc

Unfortunately the rough terrain forklift will not be suitable for our needs, as we need some off road work capability whereby the forklift would be too risky imho.
Maybe the budget will have to go up - but I was trying to keep the costs similar to the purchase price of a front loader for our tractor, hence the budget quoted.

We do not require something that is all singing, all dancing - as our needs are not commercial, and I am aware that at our price range, there is the risk of failure of say gearbox, clutches etc - but thought I would see peoples opinions.

I would be VERY careful in that price bracket.

You may need to look at quite a few before finding one that's right for you but it is doable.

This is why I am asking on here, as there are a lot of experienced users, and not everyone buys new.

Are you still looking for a 3pt link forklift then or have you moved on from that?

I have moved away from that - as I believe 'IF' we can find a reasonably good telehandler, then the budget we would need to spend on the above to get a safe unit, will be better added to the purchase price of the telehandler.

Do ex farm machines come with a tidy option

I think you will. I am looking to spend 8k plus vat but I would imagine my old Sanderson will do what you want at a lot less than 8k inc vat. I just need a machine with PUH and a bit better on the road.

Thats the problem in the UK - we have crap weather, and where we are looking to move has even more precipitation from what I hear, hence the money would be better added to a telehandler I believe. It should also help future proof our requirements hopefully.

I am hoping, and we also require pick up hitch etc to prevent having to keep buying additional equipment.

Should have thought there would be a few loadalls around that Price kicking about.
If you're not dogging it on a muck heap all day long an old 520 would do the job well under your budget.
