I’ve only ever seen it used in the cotton industry here ( years ago now ), but was shocked to discover only recently that it was used in the UK on potatoes ?

a HIGHLY dangerous, systemic poison, used in growing vegetables for human consumption

at least with planting cotton, is was fairly well removed from the food chain . . .

I don’t see why it was ever available anyhow

Hey farmer Roy do you think I should worry about health affects now after years? Wouldn’t it of done it’s damage within hours and not years later? Do some research for me. I think it gave me PTSD, I can’t even look at black pepper the same

I was an “accredited operator” back in the day & have a certificate / card to prove it, somewhere. I should know the answer to that . . .
I think you were very lucky & if you didn’t have any immediate effects, then it seems unlikely that you absorbed any into your system.

As to the psychological effects, well, that’s another story only you can answer I suppose

glad I washed it out quick!

What's your point @FarmerJohn67 ?

Temik has been banned for years. If you were an operator applying said product, then you had a responsibility to behave appropriately when handling it. PPE. Position machine and self to avoid wind, park in shelter, keep yourself upwind, or cease applying until conditions improve.

Read the label, communicate, be responsible.

Suggest Google Bhopal, India.
As I remember it was the plant where Union Carbide made the chemical.
Indians were more cheaply bought off than if such an incident had happened on US soil.

If you really wanted to use something nasty you could use methyl bromide.I worked for Vitacress for a year growing leaf salads and they used it to kill off soil life so we had no weed problems. Inject, cover with plastic wait a couple of weeks wash through with water and viola no more pesky weeds or bugs. The only issue would be if it was n't injected properly then when removing covers if you got a whiff it could paralyse or kill you.

I was thinking about the use of these chemicals as I lay in bed this morning.
If methyl bromide and Basamid were so terrible for the soil organisms, how come we saw such phenomenal results in the crops following application?
We used both in strawberry production. Only thing that got killed accidentally was a hawthorn hedge, I replanted that and you’d never know it hadn’t been there forever now.

First year of using Temik, not long after being available. Spent late winter, as several other neighbours did, fitting applicators to Beet drill.
Spring came and put drill on MF 35 (no cab) filled seed, then applicators, hadn't read instructions (as norm in those times) so stood behind applicators with wind in face.
Got a wiff didn't think to much of it, short time later came over groggy, spent a while sitting on front wheel until more or less cleared, thought FFS what the hell happened there.
Feeling ok, went to field and started drilling ,all fine.

In the meantime my neighbour (Charlie) had started drilling his beet in the next field across ditch. After awhile I got to the end of the breed, turned round to do another when noticed Charlie
wandering (drunkenly) around his tractor/drill then ending up on the floor. I got to end of breed, he was still there so walked across to see if ok.
After a few minutes he had recovered enough to explain, that he had come over all giddy etc. I explained that I had a dose while in the yard, and that is probably what had happed to him.
Charlie's drill was on a dexta but had the comfort of a Lambourne canvas cab on it. When I pointed out about my dose in the yard, he reached into his cab and pulled out a half box of Temik
that he couldn't get in his applicators, he hadn't even rolled the bag shut.

Lucky boys, both of us!

Obviously, for maximum paranoia try this in a greenhouse.

I’m pretty sure the effects of temik are short lived and recovery happens right after if you don’t get a large enough dose!

Used to shudder when customers came in the stores and brought in the broken part they needed off the temik applicator, still covered in product ! Same thing still happens to this day when punters bring in their leaking knapsack sprayers still half full. "What's it got in it ?" you ask."Nothing that'll hurt you" they reply. They all get told ," best you come back when its empty and clean if you want us to look at it!" All these tales of folklore when the chemical salesman would drink round up to prove it was safe, is there anybody still living that witnessed it first hand ?
