The Big Pig Project Diary!

Terram all the way through rather than just at the start?

I think it's more that the shed is just to warm than the pigs are getting a draft? They're too got, so they create a wallow wherever they can?

Haven't decided yet - bit of a pain to sort an overnight babysitter.
Is it a good do?

I don't know,I've never been. I should have gone last year but instead spent the evening in A&E waiting to have the end of my finger sown back on after a I had an argument with the beet harvester. :-(
The lads around here always go, they say the bit where they waffle on about how good the company is gets a bit boring but overall not a bad night apparently.

I'm going in the hope there might be an announcement of a price increase but I doubt it.;-)

Yes we're going. You get treated to a great deal of corporate waffle from BQP and Waitrose about how brilliant they think they are, but strangely never any mention of how that brilliance translates into a price rise to keep up with cost inflation for the farmer.

Then there's a load of awards where BQP staff try out their best jokes and realise comedy isn't for them. Then in return you get a dinner, gammon last year, sausages the year before (very nice) This year a hog roast?!

Last year there was a good demonstration of how to butcher a pig from one of the abattoir men.

has anyone heard of rent a sty and if so what can you tell me about them?
i was looking at taking in 900 30- 35kg for them and taking them to 90-100kg they have offered £6.50 plus .75p for washing out. i supply labour, sheds, straw and water they say around £3profit/pig/ 12 weeks but is it enough?

Its the Neal family who have rent a sty. David was dents main man but left before it went tits up. We were with dents so know the family fairly well. They seem to be doing well with rent a sty and ive only heard good reports about them. I would be happy to work with them. Think the payments they are offering will be the same as everyone else and they are quite efficient at getting pigs out and filled back up again.

you need to have plenty of cheap straw available and can use the dung to your advantage to get full benefit
