The economics of autosteer

paint the fenceposts, ideal on horsey paddocks.

We used to spray cerals with two bits of chain hung off the end of the sprayer boom, turn in a semi circle each end and the chain would be on the edge of the last bout. Followe the perfectly straight coulter mark back through the field and hey presto, no stepping up

I got the knack of stepping up quick enough, 1 pole each end of the field, kick a mark 12 yds from tractor, place pole 24yds, drive through and repeat the process at each end, perfect tramlines and you wasnt a fat bas***d at the end of the season
used to do that in 70s dosn't work on hillside one way you overlap other way you miss a strip law of pysichs chain rolls down hill used to have to go back and spray green strips in grass again

This is why there is skill involved with using GPS as well - it's not a driver replacement just a driver aid

There is also a world of difference in accuracy between a entry level system accuracy and a top of range rtk system

trouble is, you may not see it as a driver replacement, but a lot of less "sensible" operators do

oh we have autosteer, lets put an 18 year old ametuer on the drill, he will be ok, its cheaper than putting a good man on it

1 month later when they have tramlines everywhere and stopped coulters from end to end, whos the idiot?

So they need GPS with headland cut off for the drill, a blockage monitor and leave putting the tramlines in to the guy on the rtk equipped sprayer who at least had to pass a few tests to prove he has a brain

See there is a technology answer to almost every problem !

all costs money dont it?

people take this cost cutting lark very seriously now, anything what can be saved, must!

These big units are also the ones who spill more in the yard loading lorries with a telehandler than i probably harvest in a day

"skilled labour"

As i often remark, "that t**t couldnt farm a window box properly, let alone a 1000 acre. These people seem to be ever more propminet in the industry now too!

John, I really can't understand why you only farm 75 acres. You are perfect and the best at everything you do so I can't understand why you haven't been headhunted by the big firms. Or why your neighbours aren't begging you to farm their land!
You really do make yourself look silly on here. You have just described your new boss and his son as "not exactly brilliant drivers, and so far you have put them to shame!" If I was employing you and read this or someone told me what you have written. I'd say sorry John, we are not worthy if your talent, I suggest you go and slag off someone else that's paying your wages!

well considering the father said i had made a better job of the drilling that his son would, where does that put me. He taught his son, they both "manage" to get the work done. He the sort of chap who would rather pay me x amount that disrupt his golf practice to do it himself.

I wouldnt be employed by someone with your attitude anyway, i work for people who respect my views and let me do my job with no interferance

John, once again your aggression has made you miss the point! Countless times I have said that I respect and enjoy reading your thoughts! I just want to help you come across less of a hot head sometimes. What you may think is acceptable may not be shared by your golf playing boss!
I agree with stoxs, no one calls you rude names. Yes they disagree but aren't rude to you
