Good friend of mines father died in hospital last week, he had been in poor health for some time, and had been in and out of hospital a few times over the last few months.
Despite 3 clear covid tests, cause of death was put down as covid on the death certificate.

On the other hand my elderly cousin died 2 months ago.
He was in a care home with dementia and was covid positive.
His wife was asked if she wanted covid mentioned on the death certificate

Doctors with an agenda??? Who knows???
I would argue your cousin just had a kind Doctor. Mine asked if it would be alright to put "Old Age" as a cause of death for my father. I had no complaints, it stoped an autopsy and mostly truthful. There was an underlying cause but he wasn't particularly phased about how it was described.

I would suggest the same in the case of your Dr. It matters for public health and will be recorded as a death which will be used for analysis in the future. Data analysts will make something of it, but to his wife that was a kindness which was all she had to offer at that moment.

You're probably correct, I should have added that she did ask for it to be recorded as covid.

As at midnight on 9 June 2020

Patients currently being treated for COVID-19: 75

Total patients treated for COVID-19 who have been discharged: 862

Total confirmed and nationally announced deaths positive for COVID-19: 372

Numbers are currently falling sharply which suggests less very ill folk. However it`s what infectivity in the community that needs to be understood.

As at midnight on 11 June 2020

Patients currently being treated for COVID-19: 81

Total patients treated for COVID-19 who have been discharged: 880

Total confirmed and nationally announced deaths positive for COVID-19: 377

Inpatients has increased...... just a little, but this is a very "local" view that suggests increased transmission.

Sounds like @JCMaloney and the crew in Leicester have been making a lot of the progress on this.

Only helps those who are seriously ill though by the sound of it - i.e. on oxygen or ventilator.

It's funny how the government has suddenly jumped on Dexamethasone, as it's been a fairly standard drug to use on ventilated patients. And most countries have been using it since the start on the outbreak. This Oxford paper I suppose does confirm it's efficacy. :scratchhead:

Proof is always good, most people were also using Hydroxychloroquine - which it has now proved is killing more than saving. If it was simple - well it would be simple. Turns out pandemics sadly aren't simple.
Progress is sometimes slow, but this is a good, safe and affordable step in the right direction.

Dexa is a great "tool in the box" for the very poorly folk who need ventilation.
It slows the cytokine storm created from the bodies own defence system going into "overdrive".
Great early results and now standard treatment for those cases.
Still another 6 or 8 drugs and combinations of being tested.
Makes it "busy" !

You've made the news @JCMaloney

All I will say it is centred on Evington, where there are lots of "religious houses".
These aren`t your normal places of worship, they were set up in the 1950/60`s by various Shia and Sunni sects in terraced houses.
The folk that set them up are elderly, Asian and still meet up.............. what could go wrong?

Thats a brutal somwhat negative reply MS. Expect better of you! After reading reports in The Times and elsehwere about the Oxford team and the support from NHS in general to get a fully replicated clinical trial running when the rest of world are just jumping about my hats off to them. Anyway apologies if have offended you but you comment seemed un-measured and offhand - unlike you. Best wishes though.

My criticism is of Cummings and co inventing stories of game changing drugs that could have saved thousands of lives (4-5K in UK alone) if used from the start this is wrong. The drug has already saved thousands of lives, not could have.

For example Spanish researchers published a paper in the Lancet as far back as the 7 February on the widespread use and benefits of Dexamethasone in treating ARDS patients. The Oxford study (Recovery trial) is specifically related to Covid patients but confirms the the findings of the earlier Spanish trial, which in itself is very important, but game changing? What also must be emphasised this Drug has only been shown to benefit the small percentage of patients who received supplemental oxygen, no one else. However, we should be getting more preliminary results from the Recovery trial over the next weeks and months on the all the other drugs and treatments they are monitoring. Which hopefully will increase the understanding of these drugs when used in Covid patients.

Hi, thank you for your comprehensive reply. I was little barbed in my initial comment. My apologies. I follow what you say. I had not taken all that into account. I suppose having listened to the Oxford folk thank their NHS colleagues and others I saw some genuine useful output for once. Regards.

Having a chat with a vet today, they quite commonly use Dexamethasone when nothing else seems to be working, and it often does do the trick.

Is it just me or has the press lost interest in the virus? No charts, little in the way of updates, you would think the whole thing is over.
