The Use of Sustainable Soya in Wynnstay Feed

How We Can Reduce Our Environmental Impact Through More Sustainable Practices
With recent media and government focus on global issues such as climate change, deforestation, and sustainability, and in particular, how the agricultural sector is contributing to these, we are continually reviewing how we can reduce our environmental impact through more sustainable practices. Sustainability is important for the future of our business and our customer’s businesses, and that is why since 1st April 2020, the soya in all Wynnstay manufactured feeds has been sustainable soya.

The Use of Sustainable Soya in All Wynnstay Feed
Sustainable soya is soya that has been credited under a sustainable/responsible sourcing scheme approved through RTRS (Round Table on Responsible Soy Association) via FEFAC (The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation). The approved schemes audit the soya growers and they are paid a premium for growing the soya under the scheme rules, which include but are not limited to:
  • Zero deforestation
  • Use of best agricultural practices
  • Protecting worker welfare
  • Managing GHG emissions through continual improvement
  • Anti-slavery and child labour
We are proud we can offer this to our customers, and we will continue to look at all aspects of our business to ensure a more sustainable future for all.

That's a lot of vague terms!

Zero deforestation-I assume that means not grown on recently deforested ground-would ground cleared say 10 years ago meet the criteria?

Best practice-what is it and how decides?

Anti slavery, child labour, protect worker welfare-could mean no one under 14, portable toilets and minimum wage for the area.

Managing emissions through continual improvement? Might just mean the new machine uses a bit less fuel.

I'd have more respect, if, instead of pandering to ill informed critisism, business actually fought back.

In this case by pointing out that ruminant feed grade soya is a waste product from the soya oil industry and farming has nothing to be ashamed of!

All of which will apply to PK usage in livestock feed- a way to utilise a waste product.

Of course, any feed company wishing to show their green credentials would say what percentage of the time their trucks are travelling empty.
