Hmm... I think that Mikhail Gorbachev was a fairly decent fellow; it is a great shame that his charisma didn't match his wisdom - although, clearly, he wasn't fully up to speed in re Putin. Had it done so, Russia and the World would probably be pretty different now, and almost certainly both for the better.

It is rather unnerving that for its second half, the government of the Soviet Union, for all its faults, was a more stable and accountable organisation than that currently running Russia. It would have been entirely impossible for any First Secretary alone to have had the power that Putin now wields, post-Stalin the Politburo could - and did - remove anyone unstable / dangerous.

The West have continued to expand NATO closer to Russia after the break up of the Soviet Union, for what purpose?
It has been to make it very clear that we have always seen Russia as the ultimate enemy, maybe consider looking at it from the other side before this war broke out for once & imagine how you might look at what was happening?

No, we have not made it clear Russia is the ultimate enemy. The expansion was at the request of those countries that has become sovereign following the collapse of the USSR. The policy has been to trade with Russia and to purchase the immense natural resources. Thus ensuring a flow of Euros and Dollars into the Kremlin coffers. The intention being this would be spent on the people, not British Football Clubs as mega yachts, but f course we allowed and actively encouraged these actions. The transgressions with war into some of the former republics and ultimately Crimea in 2014 have been looked over, swept under the carpet as Europe (UK very much included) sucked on the teat of oil and gas. And we are paying for this approach now. For toleration. The west are indeed foolish. But suppose this has been coming.
