Tit seal

too late this year but thinking forward

I had a couple of cows that lost calves in the spring and have now got mastitis in one tit. Ive stripped them out and treated all ok they are still on farm toget weight put on prior to culling

is there a product out there to seal tits up that will last throughout the summer and prevent a problem before it starts, also how have you got on with it

You'd likely get more useful responses posting this one the dairy forum, as a lot of the posters there don't look in here much since they were sectioned.

Teat sealants have been around for years, and are being widely used in dairy cows.

But aren't most of them inserts, which themselves can cause physical injury and provide an access for bacteria or an attraction for flies?

And I'm not surprised that a number of dairy farmers have been sectioned. :scratchhead: Do you still keep in touch with Matron?

Yet they seem to work just fine in dairy herds.;) I believe it is important to make sure the teat is wiped/disinfected before the seal is put in, otherwise you just seal in the bugs introduced.

Years ago we tried a teat dip that put a thin film/skin over the teat, but it really needed applying every fortnight or so to be effective so we dropped it after a while. I can't see regular applications being made by anyone that thinks using Orbaseal is too difficult, and neither would be easily done with a herd of mad limmy sucklers.

Orbeseal, boviseal, cepralock etc are brand names. Come in a 4.5gram tube and you insert the end into the teat canal, hold your finger at tight at the top of the teat to stop it going into the udder, and push the plunger. It's a bit like thick toothpaste.
