You weren't persuaded to do a few quick repairs while you were there then

What is the function of a boundary stone, is it to mark the boundary between two different land holdings
They used to carry out a perambulation or walk around the bounds of the manor every so often so that everyone knew where the estate ended. This one dates from 1828 when the manor changed hands and the points along the way were marked with stones. We have other stones out in the meadows to show where some of the strip boundaries were located from the days before the enclosure.
There is a Saxon perambulation of the manor from about the 7th century where they wrote down all the landmarks, and although the experts haven't worked it all out yet, they think "Thon haran withig" refers to "The hoary (ancient) willow" alongside our stone. It split into the river last year but we have trimmed it back and hopefully it will be good to go on for a few more centuries.

It's a bridge, but which one?
It was the first of its kind in the World.

Looking end on the left hand side is still open, the right hand has had the surface removed.

The base of the bridge are cast iron plates.

It's The Iron Bridge
All the scaffold is free standing, none of it is allowed to touch the bridge.
