....we ran out of home produced food.

Fair play to the NFU for highlighting the fact. Shame agriland edited out what action the NFU are calling for.

What specific measures do folk on here think that our National unions should be demanding of Government to increase self sufficiency ?
Ban all the schemes that encourage farmers to produce less or nothing, stop using valuable farmland to produce AD plant feedstock, horse hay, houses or rewilding, leave all that for the poor land.
Stop people gathering up land for tax purposes then claiming they are farmers while doing nothing.
Force supermarkets and other buyers to sign realistic/transparent contracts that leave a margin for everyone while allowing competition, and don't let them out of these contracts just because they can buy cheaper on the open market. Make it illegal to use basic staples such as milk to be loss leaders.
Ensure imports are to the same standard, reduce the unnecessarily stupid parts of farm assurance but shut down any producer and processor breaking the basic rules.
Stop trying to ban grazing livestock, make them an essential part of arable rotations.

That will do for a start I'd have thought.

Demanding is exactly what we should be doing, while the NFU try to keep their cosy relationship with the Government and get treated with contempt, half the workforce of the country have been on strike, DEMANDING this that and the other.

Who has been more successful?
Two different situations, demanding from your employer and going on strike VS demanding from your government. Politicians don't think beyond the next election and will only do whatever they need to get elected again. People directly involved in farming is a small part of the electorate so not likely to be listened to. Food security being an issue well we can import from our overseas friends.

Most of those on strike are employed by the Government.

Take a hard look at carbon/methane. And ask themselves, honestly, how much of it do they really believe and how much are they obliged to believe less their careers post parliament be harmed.

Crap like biodiversity net gain should be investigated/seen for the crock of shite it is too. Taking land 10 mile away out of food production to create a habitat so that tescoburys can tarmac over another 40ac of green belt. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s like offsetting the fires on Rhodes by pissing in the garden and claiming an offset coz your garden isn’t on fire.

Introduce a supplier led (all producers/suppliers, not just ag) Red Trolley audit, to give consumers confidence that their chosen grocer adheres to a strict code of conduct around fair pricing, reasonable demands placed upon suppliers etc with some curve balls thrown in like mass balance to show that the same number of consumers are leaving their premises as are entering.

Think that's a few years oot of date, how long has the UK been importing food from abroad especially the Empire, couple of centuries???

I wonder can you be self-sufficient in food and tick all the want boxes from the landowner/farmer or do you have to force them down that road?
If you go down the "self sufficiency" you then have to "realistically" tell the consumer the consequences of going down that route.
I'd suggest that for that to be effective that you must use Canada's supply management system or similar or it won't work.
I'm sure Pierre Trudeau's son might need a job in the future, and well even pay the airfare!!!
