Depends what you tell authorities when they stop you and if they believe you. had police stop me threating to impound tractor for carting my own bedding muck to my own land

What if just hired
Probably the same. Just going by a situation about ten years ago when I went on a long journey. We enquired as to the legality of fetching a second hand purchase on red fuel. We were told no problem as long as we owned it, which we did as the cheque had cleared. Was told it would be a good idea to have a copy of the paperwork with me.

Surely you’ve got to be seriously unlucky to get stopped randomly in a tractor?! Most police round here couldn’t care less.

What job?

If you were collecting a hired digger for some building work at home you could be in hot water, whereas if it was to empty your muck lagoon you would be ok.
Would you? I think it is a grey area if you collect a digger and use it on farm empty a lagoon or ditching you've hauled it there if that's the end of the job for the tractor that's pure haulage but if the tractor goes on a spreader or trailer to haul away spoil it's part of the operation. If I go move some bales for a farmer then I'm purely hauling them but if I've baled them to I'm just completing another operation in the chain from field to stack
