Tractor found parked up ‘with its engine running and no one in it’

A tractor was left running and unattended while its driver was in a nearby shop buying lunch, a local police team in the UK have noted, highlighting the risks involved with such an action.

The unattended tractor was discovered by members of Dorset Police, outside a Tesco store in Blandford Forum, in England, last Thursday (October 15).

Taking to social media to highlight the matter, Dorset Police said:

When we visited Tesco’s in Blandford we didn’t expect to find a £110,000 [€121,800] tractor parked up near the entrance with its engine running and no one with it.

“We soon located the driver leaving Tesco’s with a meal deal.

“There’s absolutely no reason to leave the engine running in these circumstances.

“Quitting is a fineable offence; we would like to raise awareness to the risks of doing this. To prevent thefts, accidents and injuries.

Imagine, if someone had taken it, the damage they could have done and the risks to everyone isn’t worth thinking about.

The police force said that, while there is no excuse for his actions, the driver wasn’t given a fixed penalty.

Explaining this, Dorset Police said: “The driver was out of sight of the tractor, which was running for several minutes.

“When he returned, we pointed out the risks to him; he now fully understands the consequences so under the circumstances he was given words of advice.”

Left my car in the car park to walk into town and passed a RR standing with the engine running. The angle I passed and smoked windows meant that I could not see the drivers position. I just assumed s/he was getting ready to leave. Came back an hour later and going in the opposite direction I could see the drivers position clearly and it was empty and the engine still running.

Charging the battery innit.....

When I was a student, we had a Ford 6600 with a duff battery which we were told to take out fencing. At lunch time, we drove back in the Landie and left the 66 ticking over on the Wiltshire Downs. The gaffer told us to go off for another job after lunch and we forgot all about the tractor, until the stockman came running round the next day saying that someone had nicked it . After we remembered where we left it, we quietly took the Landie up and collected it, still ticking over, before anyone realised with no harm done except the usual 6600 stuff of smoke, recon engine needed, etc etc..

Wondering if the guy getting his sandwiches would have got the hump if the tractor had been stolen, and reported it and expected the police to jump to attention and run about trying to find it for him and get the thief convicted, etc. And then moaned on here when all he got was a crime number?

Those of you old enough will remember that the early mk 1 mini had the starter button on the central tunnel beside the handbrake and was permanently live. That is the starter would turn even if the ignition was off. I was standing talking to my neighbour on the road when his minivan started leaping down the road in kangaroo jumps. 'What's going on?' 'Oh there's a sheep standing on the starter button!' 'Why don't you leave it in neutral?' 'No handbrake!'
