tractor insurance

In another life I dealt with several insurance brokers and I remember one particular occasion where a borrowed handler had got stuck in a hedge clippings fire and burnt to a crisp. The farmer had to insure it himself of course.

The insurer's broker didn't want to know and wouldn't even answer the phone to the person responsible. His secretary said he was always busy or out. As it happened I insured with him at the time, so I called and got put straight through to the broker but handed the phone over to my mate who's handler it was. I was standing right by him when the phone was on speakerphone and the broker said "I don't care about your payout. You have never put a penny in my pocket".

Well I can tell you, I never insured with him again and whenever anyone asked, which they frequently did, as to who to insure with, they were always told "anyone except **********" The payment was eventually made, but nearly 9 months after the event and after Court action was becoming imminent.
If he hadn't had a penny in his pocket then, he lost more than a pretty penny in existing and potential new customers as a result of his appalling payout practice.

farmers mercantile £1300. 54 that's £300 cheaper than my insurer. told my insurer and they came back at £1252 that's cheeper than last year . its all one big fecking con!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My fag packet says insurance is £130 per £10,000 value .
I remember when I first become involved with the business back in the mid 80's that tractor insurance was £10 plus £10 per thousand so not far off that price.
Of course, I was young back then so wouldn't really know if that was a good price or not, I suspect back then we like most farmers just insured with the NFU.

just had renewal for my tractor and its gone up 150 pounds from 1450 to 1600. its my only tractor and I do contracting only with it. tractor is nh 7.200 auto. it just seems a fecking lot for insurance what do you pay for your ins and with who

Not much use to you I fear, but I pay under €50 fully comprehensive any driver, anywhere in Europe, plus a few other countries, and including cover for a trailer and implements. NH TCE45, so not a big tractor, but even so, why is it so expensive in the UK?

For perspective of that €50, I have just renewed cover on a Renault Kangoo van 2012, present value (used vehecles are expensive here) about €7000. Same cover as above - €146. Road tax €31.

I had a quote from NFU and Towergate for the same cover .

There was less than £100 in it for total farm cover including Mutual bonus(the longer you stay the more LOYALTY discount you get)
Not worth changing IMHO.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
