trailed discs

Does anyone use them these days ,i used to use an old set of trailed that evenually wore out ( always managed to get a seed bed) and were replaced by some of these mounted "short type" which seem to be the fashion but they dont seem to do a good all round job no depth or penentration ,how does a set of trailed discs compare with a lemken smagard( spelt right?) as an alternative ?

I don't no anyone locally with a mounted set of discs. You will not beat a trailed set, they weigh more, a larger frame means you can fit levelling boards in, better depth control and you can run your tractor tyre pressures much lower with no need for a front weight.

Don't see many about now but the neighbours used to pull a big simba set with a simba cultipress behind then sow with a Moore drill. Their first min till setup. Apart from that none but in certain situations i do think a set would be handy..
're the smaragd yes they do a good job but lift the soil more.

I used dawdswell 88 this year for stewardship plots when it was dry in May

when I used them regularly in the 1980s set the drawbar off set with a double press on the back to pull them straight
once I got the pressure on the back just right they leave a nice level finish

modern short discs a lot easier to set but not as good in hard dry conditions
