has been bought by Jeremy Desmond, the transport manager who launched it more than two years ago.

The Melbourne, North Yorkshire, business was set up in August 2013 as a division of agricultural machinery manufacturer Sumo UK.

Desmond was brought in by Sumo UK’s founder and family friend Shaun Wealleans to head up the new haulage division as transport manager.

Originally created to transport farm equipment built by its parent firm across Europe, Sumo Heavy Haulage has gained in reputation and fleet size and now carries equipment for organisations such as John Deere, Euro Auctions and the Ministry of Defence.

The fleet comprises four trucks and five trailers, with a fifth tractor unit hired in during peak times.

Desmond will be joined in his new business venture with wife Emma, who has worked at Sumo UK for 14 years, most recently as sales manager. She has also overseen the O-licensing and regulatory administration for the business.

“It’s an exciting time for Emma and I,” said Desmond, “and we are looking forward to a bright future ahead with Sumo Heavy Haulage.”

He added: “We will continue to build on our reputation and will provide the high level of service for our current and new customers as the business expands, keeping up our commitment to customer focus at all times. We are a family orientated business and aim to project that in all we do.”

Sumo UK MD Simon Herring said the handover would allow his company to focus on the core business of the design and manufacture of agricultural machinery.

“We are keen to keep a working relationship with Sumo Heavy Haulage and it will continue to deliver our machines, providing a professional service to our dealer and customer network throughout the UK.”

:)I'm still here:)

The decision to split off the haulage side was a difficult one but we're all happy with the new arrangement.(y)

We've been through some serious restructuring since Sept '14, early on I thought it would be prudent to prepare the business for hard times (low commodity prices, poor exchange rate and possible brexit), this has proved the right thing to do as we're now a smaller team but busy, rather than a big team with not much to do.
We are now recruiting for several roles throughout the business.

We're now well positioned (both staff and monetary) to stand whatever might come our way.

On the sales front we're changing the way we work, going back to our roots, concentrating more on the demo side of things, currently recruiting for the eastern counties.

cheers, Shaun.
