Vernalization ?

My understanding was that vernalisation started the moment the seed went active, so enough moisture to start the germination procedure. Looking at the forecast our Santiago might be ok, fingers crossed
Ours will need a snorkel, what the bloody crows and pigeons don't eat. :(

a guy who did a germination test for me put the seed in the fridge before putting them out on the tray to germinate, he reckons more will grow and it also triggers them all to grow simultaniously instead of germinating over the period of a week or so

well I reckon we don't need to worry much about this now given the temperatures of the last couple of weeks ??

Unless of course, the cold has delayed growth so much that tillering will be reached later than we expected.

I'm confident vernalisation will have occured, just stated above to add to debate.

Crows certainly made a real mess of mine. We need mild now to get some growth, just as long as it gets down to plus five at night, will suit me better than cold.

Never seem crops so far behind in mid march - can't see much growth reg being needed this year !

Going to be a lean year for the supply trade I reckon !

Two bags of wheat seed left. Very tempted to plough and sow it tomorrow. Head says leave it in the bag. But, it is very cold just now which is going to last a while as I see it. hmmmmmmmmm...............?

When will it ripen

My father says he remembers 1947 cold march no spring planted crops did well because of a drought hot summer

We are all at the mercy of the weather
You can find years in the past to suit any outcome good yealds low yealds late harvest early harvest time will tel

Wheat sown in feb is not through the ground yet, so doubt it would be far behind that.

I agree, looking back at history is pointless.

I had the same question about vernalisation 2 months ago for a glasshouse experiment, I germinated Cordiale and Grafton in a fridge for 2 weeks <5 and it worked out fine

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
