Vet student looking for dairy placement

Hi,

I'm a vet student just about to start the graduate entry course at the RVC and I'm looking to do a couple of weeks with a dairy herd between the end of July and the end of September (it has to be minimum 90 milking cows as required by the uni). I'm based in hertfordshire and have a full driving license so I am able to travel to any location, preferably I am looking for somewhere which has self catered accomodation on site however I am also happy to take a placement somewhere near to a b&b/campground if accomodation is not included. I have worked with beef cattle previously however I would really like to get some experience with dairy cows, I am a very keen learner so I am more than happy to take part in any work required as it is all good experience for me.

Please reply to this thread if you would like any more details from me.

Get in touch with the Westpoint Farm Vet guys in your area. They will do the majority of dairy herds around there and will know who is student friendly. Good luck.

I've just been confirmed on a poultry placement from the 14th - 27th of september so this might overlap?
Thank you though, that would have been perfect if I had been available at the right time!

Can I put a recommendation in for these vet students. We have 3 every autumn for calving,(we are booked for the next two years) even with sometimes zero knowledge they are always very helpful, keen, very quick learners and good to have around.
If you find them helpful give them a few quid as they have no chance to earn during the holidays as they are always on placement.
Remember we need them as much as they need our help now.

Always pay here. If they can keep off their phones when working they will almost certainly be an asset

Would there ever be vet students looking for work in March/April or are placements always in the summer?
We do have easter holiday free for placements over march/april however I think most of us have to do lambing during this time. It is definitely worth posting around that time though as I'm sure that a lot of vet students have had plenty of lambing experience prior to entering the course so would be more than happy to go for a dairy placement instead :)

We get students from RVC for calving, normally Yanks as they do a accelerated course, most are very keen to learn, even if the knowledge is poor, just don't have a vegan (and do ask them) as at a high stressful point of the year they'll make it a nightmare (we've had one and she was only just gone vegan), neighbour lambs a large flock and has had vet students for 40 years and isn't any more because of vegan students being total assholes during their placement.

We had vet students for years and never a problem.

Amazingly we got sent 2 vegans back to back and didnt bother again. We did enquire why we had them to sent us and apparently there was no bending the rules and they had to get experience. Ridiculous.
